The Daniel & Florence Guerlain Foundation has announced the names of the three selected artists for the 2016 prize.
Jana Gunstheimer, born in 1974 in Zwickau (Germany)
After studying art history and ethnology in Leipzig, Gunstheimer enrolled at the Burg Giebichenstein Kunsthochschule in Halle. Her works feature in major collections, including the Mnam-Centre Pompidou, Paris; the Seattle Art Museum; the Daniel and Florence Guerlain collection; the Wallace collection (USA); and the OEhmen collection (Germany). Until February 28, 2016, the Museum Morsbroich in Leverkusen (Germany) is hosting a solo show.
She is represented by Conrads, Düsseldorf, and Römerapotheke, Zurich.
Cameron Jamie, born in 1969 in Los Angeles (USA)
A graduate of CalArts, Jamie was a guest artist at the 2005 Whitney Biennale in New York and at the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, in 2006. In France, he took part in Traces of the sacred, Masters of Chaos, 1984–1999. The Decade and in the most recent Lyon Biennale. His works are held by the Mnam-Centre Pompidou, Paris and the Florence and Daniel Guerlain collection.
He is represented by Barbara Gladstone (Brussels and New York), Bernier-Eliades (Athens) and Buchholz (Cologne).
Anne-Marie Schneider, born in 1962 in Chauny (France)
A graduate of the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts, Paris, Schneider’s work has already been shown at the Documenta, Kassel, the Museo Reina Sofia, Madrid, and in a solo show at the Musée d’Art moderne de la Ville de Paris. Her works have been purchased by the latter museum, the Mnam-Centre Pompidou, Paris, and the Florence and Daniel Guerlain collection. They can also be seen at the Museum Het Domein and Museum Overholland (Netherlands) and at the Yale University Art Gallery (USA).
Nominated for the Marcel Duchamp Prize in 2010, she is represented by Michel Rein, in Paris and Brussels, and Peter Freeman in New York.
An exhibition of the three artists will be shown in Paris at the Salon du dessin from March 30 to April 4, 2016 at the Palais de la Bourse. The jury will meet on March 31, 2016, and the winner will be announced on the same day. Members of the jury are: Lorenza Pallanti (Italy), Michael Ringier (Switzerland), Budi Tek (China), José Olympio Pereira (Brazil), Nathalie Mamane Cohen (France), Jean-Luc Enguehard (France), Daniel Schildge (France), and Daniel and Florence Guerlain (France).
The winner receives an award of 15,000 EUR, while the two runners-up each receive an award of 5,000 EUR. A work by the winner is donated by the Foundation to a French institution.
About the Prize
This prize is reserved for French and foreign artists, whether they live in France or not, who sustain a privileged cultural link with France, and for whom drawing constitutes a significant part of their work.
Awarded for the first time in 2007 and biennial until 2009, the Prize honours artists who make any unique work on paper or cardboard using graphic means: crayon, charcoal, red chalk, ink, wash tint, gouache, watercolour, pastels and felt. Resulting works may include collages and wall drawings, but exclude computer and mechanical processes.
The candidates are selected by a committee composed of the two founders, Daniel and Florence Guerlain, and of four members chosen for their competence and interest in contemporary art. Following a working meeting with the artists, studio visits and analysis, the committee selects three artists whose work is presented to a jury that changes with each prize and responsible for choosing the winner.
Created in 1996, the Daniel & Florence Guerlain Contemporary Art Foundation organized exhibitions in the family property for ten years, before Daniel and Florence Guerlain decided to devote the Foundation’s activities to the Contemporary Drawing Prize. The award receives the support of Neuflize OBC, Guerlain, Axa Art, Artcurial, Voisin Consulting, Loticis, Le Chêne vert, the Foundation’s Cercle des Amis and Champagne Bruno Paillard.
