ArteEast Quarterly: summer 2015
ArteEast is pleased to announce the release of the summer 2015 edition of ArteEast Quarterly, an online publication that offers readers a critical forum for contemporary artistic practices in the Middle East, North Africa and their diaspora.
Summer 2015, ArteZine: “From Solid to Solidarity: Art and Architecture in New Cities”
Guest editor: Arie Amaya-Akkermans
What is historical change, and how can historical change apply to the study of the future? Can cities or regions influence the global project through injecting new variables in other, more complex and less adaptive modernities? Investigating such questions, the summer issue of ArteZine provides comparative observations on contemporary art across the Arab region and Latin America with a particular interest in its relationship to architecture.
Marlon de Azambuja‘s monologue, entitled “Fragments,” is a methodological discussion on different stages of his recent work such as Edicto, which inspired this issue; his large-scale installation Brutalism; and extended photographic project Gran Fachada, articulating the transformative effect of new urban models, center-periphery dynamics and the future of the cities. Fari Bradley and Chris Weaver‘s “Variations in Place: Lines of Communication, from London to Bogotá to Dubai” explores sound as a container of historical data and how it shapes architectural spaces, reevaluating two of their sound interventions. The first is a radio broadcast that highlights the notion of “an imagined city” through sounds across London and Bogota audiences; the latter is Variations for a Space and its History, an ongoing sound/performance project, the last iteration of which recently took place at Art Dubai 2015. Christian Carle-Catafago shows the “Beirut Walls, Buenos Aires Walls and Monumentos a la Deriva” (“Adrift Monuments”) series, drawn out of his journeys to three different geographies in the last decade in “Beirut, Buenos Aires, Antarctica: Three Photographic Essays.” Finally, “The Difficulty of Equilibrium” is a conversation between Maria Jose Arjona and guest editor Arie Amaya-Akkermans that focuses on the Dubai-based re-enactments of two performances—Cheryl Pope’s Balancing Stacks and Arjona’s own work Permanence. It also attempts to open up new discursive possibilities towards the body and otherness.

Summer 2015, Gallery: “Reframing Art and Culture in Contemporary Institutional Practices: The Case of Istanbul”
Guest curator: İlhan Ozan
This Gallery rethinks the role of institutions in contemporary art practices through case studies of recent socio-politically relevant exhibitions from Istanbul. The common tendency amongst these exhibition models is their responsiveness to locality in terms of time and space. They not only offer a curatorial approach that pays attention to the specific social and historical context and challenge cultural-historical constructions, but they also engage with the public through new forms of relationality and ways of experiencing art. The Summer Gallery puts together a selection of installation views from these exhibitions, while providing insight into the urgent issues in art history with a focus on Istanbul.
