Frieze Talks is a programme of lectures, performances, conversations and panel discussions, taking place at Frieze London and featuring today’s most innovative artists and thinkers. Participants in this year’s Frieze Talks include artists Bruce McLean and Trevor Paglen; writer Jon Ronson; newly appointed Chief Curator of MOCA Los Angeles Helen Molesworth and artist and musician Linder, among many others.
Frieze Talks 2014 is curated by frieze editors Jörg Heiser (Co-Editor), Christy Lange (Associate Editor) and Amy Sherlock (Reviews Editor).
This year the programme considers some of the most topical subjects in today’s cultural landscape, exploring how contemporary artists and curators address issues of performance, sexuality and public and private identities. Helen Molesworth will speak to artist and founding member of General Idea AA Bronson; and artist Wu Tsang will appear in conversation with Charles Atlas, whose use of film has been one of Tsang’s formative influences. Best-selling author Jon Ronson, known for his book The Psychopath Test (2011) and the film Frank (2014), will introduce “An Afternoon of Public Shaming.” The programme will also feature two artist presentations: Bruce McLean will present “Bruce McLean (action sculptor) interviews himself”; and Trevor Paglen, whose groundbreaking writing, research and artwork in the field of experimental geography was recently honoured with a Pioneer Award from the Electronic Frontier Foundation, will discuss his newest work with writer and curator Omar Kholeif.
Other highlights include a panel discussion on “Feeling Used: The Appropriation of Sexuality,“ featuring Jennifer Doyle and artists Simon Fujiwara and Linder, chaired by frieze‘s Paul Clinton; and a conversation about “The Anthropological Turn” in art practice that sees an increasing use of the tools and methods of social sciences, including panelists Iman Issa, Naeem Mohaiemen and Dieter Roelstraete, and chaired by writer and frieze contributor Kaelen Wilson-Goldie.
Complimenting the Frieze Talks programme will be daily screenings of a selection of frieze video—short films produced by frieze in conjunction with production company Pundersons Gardens—including the half-hour feature Our Glasgow (2014).
Admission: Frieze Talks takes place in the onsite auditorium at Frieze London from Thursday 16 October through Saturday 18 October. Access to Frieze Talks is included in all admission tickets. Places can be reserved from noon on the day of each talk at the information desk outside the auditorium.
