Artissima launches Per4m, a new pioneering section dedicated to performance, and announces the members of the 2014 Back to the Future and Present Future curatorial committees.

In keeping with Artissima’s identity as a cutting-edge workshop of contemporary art, Per4m proposes a totally new approach in the way performance is presented in the context of contemporary art fairs, in response both to its popularity as a medium and its increasing recognition in the art market. Per4m is not intended simply as a collateral event, but as a section of the fair in its own right, open to all galleries participating in Artissima. Per4m will include a programme of 16 performances, four per day, which will not be presented within gallery booths but in a dedicated space within the fair ground (or in shared areas of the fair pavilion if required by the artists), thus ensuring great visibility and attendance on the part of the public.
Per4m is curated by a committee of three young curators with international reputations: Simone Menegoi (coordinator), independent curator; Tobi Maier, art critic and curator; and Natalia Sielewicz, curator, Museum of Modern Art, Warsaw. The committee will not only select among the proposals submitted by the galleries, but will also propose artists and projects in order to create a high level programme reflecting the specificity and diversity of performing art.
Per4m is open to all forms of contemporary performance, from the ones proposing new formats inspired by other live arts such as theatre, dance, and music or those created as an extension of the traditional media in visual arts such as painting and sculpture, to the ones where language plays a central role or those essentially based on images.
Per4m will introduce a new and important prize, the Prix K-Way Per4m, to be assigned during the fair by an international jury to the most significant and noteworthy performance among those presented at Artissima. The 10,000-euro prize proves the relevance given to this section ever since its first edition as well as the special interest of the partner K-Way in this medium.
Through Per4m, Artissima is pursuing new and ambitious objectives, in the conviction that experimentation means being able to innovate and constantly seeking out new challenges.

Back to the Future is a unique section of the fair that is designed to draw the attention of professionals, collectors and the general public to artists who were active in the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s, and who have played an important role in the history of contemporary art, but who have not always had the visibility they deserve. These artists, who hail from different countries and continents, are selected both for their innovative and experimental approach and for their ongoing influences on younger generations. Galleries participating in the Back to the Future section will present their artists through solo shows of museum-like quality, in their booths.
Present Future curatorial committee
Artists for Present Future, the section of the fair dedicated to solo shows by emerging artists, will be proposed by a committee composed by young curators of international renown.

Over the years, Artissima’s notable section Present Future has proved itself to be an important launch pad for talented young artists, and a significant platform for disseminating new visions and approaches. This highly successful section has continued to evolve over recent years, becoming ever-more central to Artissima, both physically and conceptually.
illy Present Future Prize
Presented during Artissima, the illy Present Future Prize is awarded to the most interesting work in the section, by a jury of international museum directors and curators. Since 2012, the award has taken the form of an exhibition produced by the winning artist(s), in the prestigious setting of the Castello di Rivoli Museum of Contemporary Art, Turin. In November, two solo projects by Caroline Achaintre and Fatma Bucak, winners of the illy Present Future Prize in 2013, will be hosted in the Museum.

The next edition of Artissima will take place 7 to 9 November (preview and opening on 6 November) at the Oval, Lingotto, in Turin.
Artissima is the leading contemporary art fair in Italy, and, over the years, it has attained a prominent place on the international scene thanks to its experimental nature and its dynamic, innovative focus on both emerging and rediscovered artists.
The high quality of the artwork on display, the rigorous selection of galleries and a parallel programme of exhibitions and events that involves the whole city of Torino, have turned Artissima into a vibrant hub of culture which attracts collectors, art lovers, professionals and a general public from around the world.
Alongside the Back to the Future and Present Future sections, Artissima 2014 will include: Main Section, dedicated to the most interesting established galleries on the international scene, New Entries, which brings together remarkable young galleries from around the world that have been operating for less than five years, and Art Editions, inaugurated in 2012.
In 2013, Artissima welcomed more than 50,000 visitors to its 20,000 square meters of fair surface, with 190 galleries participating, from 38 countries. Furthermore, over 5,000 collectors from around the globe attended the fair, while 200 invited prominent collectors took part in the fair’s hospitality programme. Also in 2013, over 50 international museum directors and curators visited the fair within a special dedicated programme.
