Latitude is delighted to publish the results of their 3rd Sectorial Study at SP-Arte, the São Paulo International Art Fair which includes for the first time this year an additional exclusive chapter conducted by Anders Petterson, Managing Director of ArtTactic, focusing on the perception of international collectors about the Brazilian art market. The 3rd Sectorial Study reports steady growth in the market, above international trends and the 2013 figures also report a significant increase in volume of business and sales for member galleries. This study is the only one of its kind to be published and was completed by Latitude’s Research Coordinator, Dr. Ana Leticia Fialho in collaboration with Anders Petterson, Managing Director, ArtTactic. Latitude has also brought a group of leading figures from the international art world to the fair as part of their Art Immersion Trip programme.

Highlights of the 3rd Sectorial Study include:
90% of Brazilian galleries surveyed reported an increase in volume of business and 60% hired additional members of staff in 2013.
–The average growth among all galleries surveyed in 2013 was 27.5% (up from 22.5% in 2012).
Total export sales for Latitude galleries in 2013 were 51,314,577 USD, which is an almost 90% increase over 2012′s export sales of 27.130.165 USD.
–The main destinations of exports were reported to be the United States, United Kingdom, Switzerland, France, Spain and Colombia which is a new addition to the list of top destinations.
–As part of an exclusive study by ArtTactic coordinated by Anders Petterson, it was found that there is great interest and confidence on the part of international collectors in the Brazilian art market as 40% of collectors surveyed had already acquired works by Brazilian artists, and 74% intend to do so in the next five years.
Since the project started in 2007, Latitude: Platform for Brazilian Art Galleries Aboard has brought almost 150 influential buyers, curators, journalists and Directors of international art institutions to Brazil through art immersion trips. Latitude has brought a group to SP-Arte and will be taking them to Instituto Inhotim. This initiative has helped to double the number of international curators working within the Brazilian Contemporary art scene.

Current attendees include Abaseh Mirvali, independent curator; Adrienne Drake, Director and Curator of the Fondazione Giuliani; Aileen Corkery, curator and art advisor; Andrea Viliani, Director of the MADRE Museum, Museum of contemporary Art; Beatrice Josse, Director and Curator at FRAC Lorraine; Beverly Adams, Curator at the Blanton Museum of Art; Chris Sharp, independent curator; Fanni Fetzer, Director of art at the Kunstmuseum Luzern; Giovanni Carmine, Director of the Kunsthalle Sankt Gallen; Magnolia de la Garza, independent curator; Milovan Farronato, Director of the Fiorucci Art Trust; Pauline Yao, Curator at M+ Museum; and Vanessa Davidson, Curator of Latin American Art at the Phoenix Art Museum.

The Latitude project now has 49 galleries in the primary market, located in five Brazilian states, representing more than 1,000 contemporary artists. Latitude is a partnership between ABACT (Brazilian Association of Contemporary Art) and Apex-Brasil (Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency) with the objective of creating business opportunities for the sector abroad. Latitude aims to improve professionalism within the art market and provide new opportunities for Brazilian galleries to trade internationally.
