Artist Guillermo Mora (b. 1980, Alcalá de Henares), represented by the Formato Cómodo Gallery, is the winner of the second Audemars Piguet prize for the creation of a work of art, which will be exhibited during the ARCOmadrid 2014 Fair, from 19 to 23 February, in the Audemars Piguet space in the VIP Area.

The jury, comprised of Ángeles González Sinde, scriptwriter and ex-Minister of Culture; Carlos Urroz, director of ARCOmadrid; Laura Revuelta, chief editor of ABC Cultural; Marga Paz, director of the Association of Friends of the Museo Nacional Centro de Reina Sofía, Octavio García, Audemars Piguet’s Chief Artistic Officer and Soledad Lorenzo, gallery owner, emphasised the particularly high quality of the almost 50 projects presented by galleries and artists from around the world.

Guillermo Mora, a Madrid native, was awarded the prize of 15,000 Euros for his cr_O_ma project. The jury highlighted, “this piece of art demonstrates new ways of using colours, paint and sculpting. An impressive piece from a very promising young artist.” He has also captured the spirit of the new women campaign’s slogan: “There are exceptions to every rule.”

Guillermo graduated in Fine Arts from the UCM, culminating in winning the First National Prize for his Degree. In 2006, he was awarded a grant from the BANCAJA Foundation to study at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (U.S.), and went on to be awarded a Postgraduate grant from the La Caixa Foundation. Some of his awards and grants include the Caja Madrid First Generation 2013, a grant from the Spanish Academy in Rome (2010–2011), a grant for visual arts from the Madrid Community, and a Honourable Mention for the ABC Art X Award. His work of art has been exhibited in MACUF, the Elgiz Museum (Istanbul), La Casa Encendida, (with an upcoming exhibition in the ICA in London), and in fairs such as ARCO, MACO and Frieze. He is represented by the Formato Cómodo (Madrid) and Casa Triângulo (São Paulo) galleries.
Audemars Piguet is a brand founded in 1875 in the Vallée de Joux, Switzerland as a result of collaboration by two passionate watchmakers: Jules Louis Audemars and Edward Auguste Piguet. Ever since, all the way down to today, Audemars Piguet has been on the technological and creative cutting edge, designing collections of watches featuring rigorous technique while exhibiting an ability to respond to their users’ wishes. 1972 marked a milestone that revolutionized the wristwatch market: Audemars Piguet presented a Gerald Genta design, the Royal Oak, which became an immediate symbol of elegance. Forty years later the Royal Oak is the watch most sought after by collectors, and its emblematic, screw-adorned octagon remains an icon. The new ground the Royal Oak broke in the early 1970s and its survival through the years following, with the creation of collector’s models that continue to transform the art of watchmaking even today, illustrates how the legitimacy of a traditional piece can he harmonized with a revolutionary design, one recognized by the media and collectors alike as a “work of art.”
