The Frieze Projects program at Frieze New York 2014 will realize seven newly commissioned projects, both in the fair and around Randall’s Island Park, Manhattan. Curated by Cecilia Alemani, the 2014 program takes inspiration from Randall’s Island’s history as a place dedicated to leisure and recreational pursuits. The seven projects aim to short circuit the usual activities that take place at the fair and as a whole envisions new temporary spaces for reflection on the role of free time in our society.

The artists participating in the Frieze Projects program at Frieze New York this year are Darren Bader, Eduardo Basualdo, Eva Kotátková, Marie Lorenz, Koki Tanaka and Naama Tsabar. The program will also feature a special tribute to Allen Ruppersberg’s Al’s Grand Hotel, originally realized in 1971 at 7175 Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles.

Three of the artists have chosen to engage with the many sports facilities that dot the landscape of Randall’s Island: Basualdo will turn the large lawn in front of the fair into a surreal soccer field; Kotátková will transform the waterfront into a jungle gym and Lorenz will take viewers on boat trips to explore the shores of Randall’s Island.

Three more of the artists refer to historical events and unfamiliar facts that characterize the island: Tsabar will invoke the musical tradition of Randall’s Island—since the 1930s it has been the site of many concerts—by organizing a mini music festival; Tanaka will invite representatives from local communities to share their experiences and life-stories; while Bader will present proposals for impossible artworks to be realized on the island.

As in the previous editions of Frieze New York, Frieze Projects features a tribute to an artist-run space that has radically transformed the way we experience contemporary art. This year the tribute will be devoted to Ruppersberg’s Al’s Grand Hotel, in the form of a fully functional hotel presented in collaboration with Los Angeles-based project space Public Fiction. The hotel will be installed within Frieze New York and will operate for the duration of the fair.
