ReMap 4, takes place from the 8th to the 30th of September 2013 in the historical Kerameikos-Metaxourgeio area in the Athens City center, and transforms the area into a unique meeting point for contemporary art.
ReMap—first organised in 2007—is an international contemporary art platform that has become known for its participatory nature, hosting a unique mix of projects with current and up-and-coming artists, curators, institutions and galleries from across the world, all presented within the existing urban context, accessible for free to its visitors.
ReMap 4′s programme is the most diverse and international since its inception, presenting 60 projects, from Greece, the United Kingdom, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, France, the United States and Turkey in spaces as varied as vacant lots, basements, neoclassical buildings and 60s apartments.
One can start exploring ReMap 4 at the Info Point, which has been designed by the newly established Mark Office (Katerina Apostolou, Minna Colakis, Argyro Pouliovali). The Info Point’s concept is based on the old Athenian house’s courtyard (Avli), and in particular the courtyard that was communal and shared by more than two houses, which constituted the private outdoor space of the city and functioned as the link between the surrounding houses offering the context for vital and vivid activities. Inhabiting an old Athenian communal courtyard with elements assembled by reusable building materials such as wood planks, concrete blocks, construction lights, cables etc, the ReMap 4 Info Point temporarily revives the spirit of the Athenian courtyard as a container of outdoor private life within the recent urban context.

Gallery shows
23 established and up-and-coming international and Greek galleries have been invited to put on shows in different locations in the KM area. Among them there are 11 Greek galleries (a.antonopoulou.art, CAN Christina Androulidaki gallery, Eleni Koroneou Gallery, Elika Gallery, Ileana Tounta Contemporary Art Center, Kalfayan Galleries, Melas Papadopoulos, Qbox Gallery, Rebecca Camhi, The apartment, The Breeder) but also galleries from Italy (Federico Vavassori, Galleria Franco Noero, Galeria Lorcan Ο’Neill Roma, T293), Switzerland (Galerie Eva Presenhuber, RaebervonStenglin), the United States (Μaccarone NY), Turkey (Rodeo), Germany (Peres Projects), Britain (Jonathan Viner, Τhe Modern Institute) as well as Gagosian Gallery.
Independent projects
34 independent projects from curators’ and artists groups from across the world are participating in ReMap 4 with particular focus on the co-existence of Greek-based and international participants, including shows and projects by galleries, artists and residents’ collectives/teams that are permanently based in the KM area (E.Δ.Ω., Kunsthalle Athena, Paramythias Horis Onoma, Synergy-O), one of Athens’ most vibrant and dynamic areas.
Institutions
ReMap collaborates with 4 important art institutions: DESTE Foundation presents Andreas Angelidakis’ communication billboards in three different locations in the KM area. Kunsthalle Athena presents the group exhibition In the Studio, which is the outcome of Daily Lazy Projects’s online documentation showcasing images from artists’s ateliers along with descriptions of their studio practices and workplace environments. NEON presents the group show Echoes of silence co-curated by Douglas Fogle and Dimitris Paleocrassas. The show, which is hosted in a converted neoclassical mansion, includes works by some of the canonical names in contemporary art, such as Rosemarie Trockel, Louise Bourgeois, Nikos Kessanlis, John Bock, Hans Bellmer, Pierre Huyghe and others. The Museum of Cycladic Art is participating with an original treasure hunt where Cycladic figurines occupy unexpected places in various ReMap 4 locations, as well as the educational programme Faces of Time.
Events
Special ad hoc projects such as concerts, performances and educational initiatives complement the exhibitions programme. For example, The Breeder presents the exhibition Bohemians, following the show initially presented in the gallery in January 2013, during which four artists who live and work in the KM area opened their studios to the public. Camp contemporary art meeting point presents the series of screenings An urban film map, which is focused on analyzing the urban landscape as depicted on film and is co-curated by Kika Kyriakakou and Andress Kikiras. The Greek-Austrian project Dada Da Academy and Psychonavigation musically enhance ReMap 4 with interactive performances.
