Korean Artist Project, originally established in 2011 in response to growing international interest in Korean art, is now recognized as the leading source of information on Korean contemporary art worldwide. KAP’s innovative online platform has been designed to address the increasing demand for access to Korean artists, offering an integrated range of informative and original contents to introduce Korea’s most promising contemporary artists to the international art community.
A key component of introducing these artists and their work to the wider public is a comprehensive catalog of video interviews that KAP has produced. With an average length of six–seven minutes and including full English subtitles, these videos allow artists to discuss their technical, aesthetic, and conceptual approaches to art-making—in their own words. The interviews have an air of informality to them—having been filmed on-site in each artist’s home and/or studio—encouraging artists to offer fresh insight into their practices and candid perspectives on their backgrounds.
Korean Artist Project provides an extensive array of online contents that make it the definitive source of information on Korea’s most promising contemporary artists. Chief among these is KAP’s acclaimed program of cutting-edge virtual solo exhibitions. Organized by curators from 19 private art museums throughout Korea and presented in KAP’s very own three-dimensional online gallery spaces, these virtual exhibitions simulate the experience of actually walking around a gallery, bringing museum-quality exhibitions of Korean art to audiences anywhere in the world.
A vast digital archive—boasting an open-source collection of over 4,000 images—enables Korean Artist Project to showcase an extensive catalogue of each artist’s work. Artist pages on the KAP website also include in-depth biographical profiles as well as critical writings by curators and other art professionals. Finally, the website’s Art News keeps readers updated with the latest information about KAP artists and upcoming Korean contemporary art exhibitions around the world.
Korean Artist Project provides the opportunity for artists and art lovers worldwide to encounter some of the most exciting art being made in Korea today and get to know 63 of the country’s leading artists. In the three years since its inception, Korean Artist Project remains committed to building on its past achievements and continuing to advance its long-term objectives. This year, KAP is proud to embrace its role as the global representative of Korean contemporary art and authoritative online directory of Korea’s finest artists.
Korean Artist Project is a three-year initiative launched by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in 2011. Based in Seoul, the project is organized by the Korean Art Museum Association. For more information, please visit www.koreanartistproject.com.
