A trilogy of operas created for the screen involving thousands of citizens of Berlin, Derby (UK), and Madrid. This is Rosas. A project based on the collaboration of communities with different backgrounds, interests, ages, talents, and abilities. Collectives of self-organized workers, dance students, actors, retired people, neighbors, musicians … citizens, in short, that put their talent to the service of others to build a popular opera under the orders of artist Marinella Senatore.

Writing of the libretto, makeup, costumes, sound recording, directing actors, acting, singing … The process of collective construction of a work of fiction is a metaphor for the creation of a new society. A disutopía where all contribute and receive the contribution of others. This exciting process is open to the viewer inside the old, cold storage of Matadero Madrid.

One of the outcomes is an audiovisual work in three different parts. Matadero Madrid is joined by the Quad arts center in Derby (UK) and the Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin, creating an international network of citizen participation. After the workshops, casting, writing, and recording of the opera, the set will be open to be used by anyone that needs the space for recording.  Participation, community, and self learning in the site specific programme Abierto x Obras.

Marinella Senatore is a filmmaker and artist. She works with video, photography, drawing, installation, and sound. In her projects, often developed in collaboration with institutions such as museums and universities, she involves entire communities in the creative process (i.e. a community of retired miners from Enna, Sicily; more than 16,000 citizens of Derby, UK; 300 Lower East Side residents, in NYC; among others).

Her work has been exhibited widely throughout Italy and abroad, including ILLUMInations, 54th International Art Exhibition, Venice; Dublin Contemporary, Dublin; 11th Havana Biennial; Moscow Inernational Biennale 2012; MACRO Museum, Rome; RISO Museum, Palermo; MADRE Museum, Naples; Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam; Moderna Museet, Stockholm; MCA, Chicago; and more.
