Image Movement at Frieze Art Fair
(13–16 October 2011)
MOVES series
(October–December 2011)
We are pleased to announce that the Berlin film and record store Image Movement will take part in the Frieze Art Fair 2011. Located in the ‘Frame’ section of the fair, Image Movement will offer a wide range of artist films and films on art on DVD as well as a variety of film editions by contemporary artists.
Foremost, we are proud to present the film edition Conflict of Meaning (Film Script) (1972/2008) by Argentinean artist David Lamelas, consisting of three glicée prints and a 16mm film transferred on DVD. The edition comprises of another mode of representation of Lamelas’ film installation Manipulation of Meaning (Film Script), which was displayed at Nigel Greenwood Gallery, London, in 1972 for the first time, and was composed of the simultaneous projection of a film and three slide sequences. Both, the film installation and edition elaborate on the nascent development of plot and scrutinizes alternating elements of narration and cinematic time.
Entirely new, this year Image Movement presents its new selection of vinyl releases of an emerging generation of contemporary artists—including Lucy McKenzie’s record label Decemberism, Tim Berresheim’s New Amerika, where he published together with Jonathan Meese, Albert Oehlen’s Leiterwagen Records, Mike Kelley’s Compound Annex or David Lieske’s Dial, Lothar Hempel’s releases on Kompakt, Kai Althoff’s vinyl albums on Sonic, Neu and Ladomat, recordings by Jutta Koether, Ferdinand Kriwet’s Radio texts, limited artist editions on en/of or Fieber, as well as historical recordings of the avant-garde/art movements of the early 20th Century.
Image Movement, Berlin
Image Movement is a film store and venue, specialising in unlimited artist films on DVD, classics of experimental and avant-garde cinema, key works of the silent movie genre, and limited artist films editions. The name is borrowed from the seminal book Cinema I. The Movement Image (1983) by Gilles Deleuze. In his writing, the French philosopher and art theorist describes the film medium as a modern concept of movement ‘capable of thinking the production of the new.’ Since its establishment in 2008, Image Movement’s range of DVDs has paid great attention to the notion that in contemporary art many artists are deeply inspired by the language of cinema and its visual codes. Designed by the artists Rosemarie Trockel and Thea Djordjadze, the interior of the shop is conceptualized at the interface between a store and an art space. Since September 2011, Image Movement has also been enhancing its range to include an artist records section, selected and organized by musician Andreas Reihse (Kreidler). You can also find a range of our products on the online store of our shop.
Event series: MOVES
As a venue, Image Movement is actively mediating artist films, art and music productions through the event series MOVES organized by Simone Neuenschwander (freelance curator, Berlin/Basel) and Andreas Reihse. Special guests whose work encompasses the fields of film, art, music, or theory are invited to participate in the events program. The artists, filmmakers, musicians, critics, or curators develop unique presentations of their projects for Image Movement, often introducing their works for the first time.
