Each year Rhizome celebrates art engaged with new technology through an evening packed with music, performance and art. Rhizome’s 2009 Benefit will take place at the New Museum in New York on Thursday May 28th, and honor two visionaries in the field of art and technology: Dara Birnbaum, an artist whose out-of-the-box thinking reflects the pioneering practices of new media artists today; and Caterina Fake, co-founder of Flickr, the photo-sharing application that has helped shape the contemporary web. The evening will feature a silent auction, live music and performances by Tanlines, Glasser, Kevin Bewersdorf and more. (General tickets are 100 USD.) For details and ticket purchase, visit: http://www.rhizome.org/benefit, call (212) 219-1222 x 232, or email benefit [at] rhizome.org.
RHIZOME 50,000 DOLLAR WEBPAGE
Online: http://www.rhizome.org/50k
A unique online fundraising initiative will accompany this year’s Benefit. In homage to The Million Dollar Homepage, one of the web’s great memes, Rhizome presents “The Rhizome 50,000 Dollar Webpage.” Equal parts fundraiser, art collaboration, billboard and community builder, the initiative aims to raise 50,000 dollars for Rhizome by selling 1,000,000 pixels of webspace at 5 cents a piece. Pixels are available for purchase now and until May 28th, when the page will be presented at the Benefit and preserved on the Rhizome site. Already, artists, galleries, non-profits and companies from around the world have left a graphic mark.
