Independent Collectors

Independent Collectors is the only online community specifically designed for collectors of contemporary art.

Often people have heated discussions about what “art” is. Apart from this challenging subject, we recently and rather unexpectedly tackled the following question with some fellow members: “What, exactly, is a collector?” And we thought this was an easy one!

When Independent Collectors was initially set up, the idea was to cater for a whole range of collectors. Those who had just started and were busy worshipping their first and only purchase should be equally as welcome as those who owned way over a thousand pieces. And so it is – or should be.

According to some, you may not be a collector.

“In terms of contemporary art, a collector is a person who collects contemporary art.” That’s what we thought. It might not be that straight forward, after all.

With over 1.300 collectors from 61 nations, there are so many different types of people, various reasons for and methods of collecting and differently shaped collections that it’s tempting to try and challenge the definition.

The individual viewpoints on this issue can be very diverse. Of course, you could always argue that a definition is not needed, but where is the fun in that? We at Independent Collectors are most interested in finding out what the individual ideas and backgrounds of our members (and future members) are. As one collector pointed out: That’s where it gets interesting!

So we invite all collectors of contemporary art to join our little collective and enrich the discussion over at the platform.

By the way, what is a gallery?

Just kidding. We don’t intend to become a dictionary and questioning concepts is not our raison d’être. What is interesting however and where we need the collectors’ input, is when it comes to rating galleries on an international level.

Again, we invite you to join Independent Collectors and to rate the galleries you are in contact with. Your rating will enable other collectors who may be less experienced than you are or who may be looking for new “sources”, to find galleries that fit their needs.

Independent Collectors was launched almost one year ago, in June 2008 by a small group of aspiring young collectors. It has since expanded to an international network of like-minded collectors and enthusiasts. It is free to join and our aim is to extend our community so that we, and you, will have a stronger pool of information and resources as we expand our collections.
