Over the summer months visitors to Centro Botín will be able to see the recently opened exhibitions, Portraits: Essence and Expression and The Reconfigured Landscape, while the ongoing exhibition Joan Miró: Sculptures 1928-1982 remains on view until September 2.
Essence and Expression are the two keynotes defining this collection of 20th century masterpieces, which Jaime Botín has deposited at Centro Botín for its permanent display. Portraits: Essence and Expression (until January 13, 2019) features eight works of undisputed visual quality by renowned, prestigious artists like Francis Bacon, Francisco Gutiérrez Cossío, Juan Gris, José Gutiérrez Solana, Henri Matisse, Isidre Nonell, Daniel Vázquez Díaz and Joaquín Sorolla. They were all produced in the early 20th century at the height of the avant-gardes, a complex period that saw a break from tradition and the rise of a wealth of overlapping artistic and aesthetic movements.
The idea of landscape, whether addressed in a literal or in a more abstract or esoteric fashion, is the common thread running through the exhibition The Reconfigured Landscape (until January 13, 2019), curated by Benjamin Weil.
A landscape that is re-engineered and re-thought rather than just depicted: a site to watch or to experience within the space of the exhibition, in itself a landscape of sorts. Drawn from the collection of Fundación Botín, apart frompainting, drawing and sculpture, the selection also includes videos and multimedia installations with works by Leonor Antunes, Lothar Baumgarten, Jacobo Castellano, Tacita Dean, Fernanda Fragateiro, Nuria Fuster, Joan Jonas, Irene Kopelman, Sol LeWitt, Julie Mehretu, João Onofre, Sara Ramo, Ignacio Uriarte and Oriol Vilanova.
In addition, until September 2, visitors can still catch the exhibition Joan Miró: Sculptures 1928-1982, the first show to analyse in-depth the Catalan artist’s creative process through the optic of his sculptures, drawings, objects, photographs and films, in a hitherto unseen vision of his work.
