The Department of Image Science is an internationally unrivaled institution for research and innovative teaching on all forms of images. Over 100 leading experts teach in the degree programs as members of the international faculty. The worlds explored at the Department for Image Science cover the entire spectrum of image histories and futures being revolutionized in the digital age. Students acquire key qualifications for the contemporary creative and cultural sector through contact with original sources and leading institutions. Outcomes of our research projects benefit not only students but beyond to influence both global and local arts and academic communities. Danube University Krems—in the UNESCO World Heritage Wachau—is the first public University in Europe specializing in continuing university studies. The modernized seminar rooms in Göttweig Abbey in the section from the 14th century offers singular surroundings to learn and explore.
As repositories of knowledge and instruments of communication the importance of image media continues to grow in our globalized society. Images form both networks of societal cohesion and have the power to ignite political and religious passions. Images create values and are a core resource for elaborating and communicating new scientific theories. Today the dynamics of the media revolution is re-defining many issues that image science engages with. In almost every field practical and theoretical knowledge about how images originate, function, are exploited, their history and their effects is an essential prerequisite for acquiring image competence in the digital age.
Research
The Department of Image Science has its core research endeavor investigating the impact of image worlds and developing new scientific tools for the analysis and teaching of the arts.
Lab for Digital Humanities research combines theories and practices from digital humanities, art history, image science and computer studies for unprecedented image-centric analysis.
The pioneer Archive of Digital Art is the longest standing academic documentation tool developed in cooperation with international media artists, researchers and institutions, as a collective overview of works at the intersection of art, science, and technology.
Göttweig Graphic Collection Online mediates the digitized wealth of images from Austria’s largest private print collection.
Media Art History Platform hosts the International Conference Series on the Histories of Media Art, Science and Technology (8th takes place in 2019), holds the open access digital repository of the field MAH-Archive and records signatories for the Liverpool Declaration.
The Media Art Research Thesaurus and numerous publications in the interdisciplinary fields where Image Science engages & explores the image revolution of the digital age.
Education
Our postgraduate, low-residency, international degree programs are closely linked to our research and unrivaled in the world. In collaboration with teaching by renowned researchers and professionals in transdisciplinary fields, a finely tuned mix of theoretical knowledge and praxis skills are imparted to both traditional students and working professionals.
Image Science, MA (partially in German)—start October 2018
Built on visual competencies, exhibition development, digital collections management and photography.
Exhibition Development, CP (in English)—start April 2019
Three intensive modules during the 1st semester, followed by self-developed project work.
MediaArtHistories, MA (in English)—start May 2019
Five intensive modules over 2 years followed by a Master Thesis on the histories & futures of Media Art.
Media Arts Cultures, MA (Erasmus Mundus joint degree)—start Sept 2019
Full-time studies with high mobility in 3–4 countries over two years. Austria, Denmark, Singapore & Poland.
