Curatorial mini-intensive
Following the success of the first curatorial mini-intensive this July, the Institute for Curatorial Practice in Performance will be hosting a second mini-intensive for students interested in ICPP’s MA program on November 8–9, 2018. Based on their applications, a small number of prospective students will be selected to attend two days of classes and exchanges of ideas at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. Attendees will also participate in sessions as part of ICPP’s 2018 field-wide convening, “Present Traditions: Performance Curation and Cultural Exchange in a Global Era.” The curatorial mini-intensive will include opportunities to learn about tuition remission and scholarship possibilities, including the ICPP Leadership Fellowships, a post-graduate opportunity for ICPP graduates supported by the Ford Foundation.

Applications are currently being reviewed and will continue until positions are filled. The curatorial mini-intensive is free, and provides accommodation and a modest travel stipend. Applicants must submit the following documents to icpp [​at​]

Present Traditions: Performance Curation and Cultural Exchange in a Global Era—performance convening
This November, Wesleyan will host the Sultan of Yogyakarta, Indonesia and a performance by his court dancers and musicians featuring instruments that are part of the University collection. Taking a cue from this event, the 2018 ICPP convening on November 8–9 examines the curation of traditional and intercultural performance forms within and outside of American institutions. This intimate gathering with invited curators, artists, and scholars reflects on some of the ethical challenges for performance curation today, in a world that is increasingly connected and puts in contact a wealth of cultural singularities. 

Engaging Traditional Arts in Contemporary Curatorial Practice—ICPP public lecture
In this ICPP public lecture, Keng Sen Ong (Director of TheatreWorks, Singapore) discusses the complex crossings between traditional performance and contemporary art practices. How can curators develop a coherent approach that engages rather than avoids traditional body practices when presenting contemporary art? Examining archives and the “re-performance” turn, as well as referencing the fields of architecture and restoration, Ong charts a field of potentialities, continuums and interventions. The lecture is free of charge and open to all.

About the Institute for Curatorial Practice in Performance
ICPP is the first institute of its kind, a center for the study of the presentation and contextualization of contemporary performance. Distinct from graduate programs in Curatorial Studies, Arts Administration, Performance Studies, and the Humanities, ICPP offers students a graduate-level education in curatorial approaches to developing and presenting dance, theater, performance and other time-based arts.

The Master of Arts in Performance Curation is a two-year, low-residency program designed to study and enrich curatorial practices through intellectually rigorous and artist-centered methods, dialogues, writing, and fieldwork. ICPP works with a core group of faculty composed of renowned curators, artists, and scholars. Students and faculty meet three times a year on Wesleyan University’s campus, alongside engaging with field-wide symposia and artists’ residencies. In addition, students have opportunities to work with a range of advisors on off-site practicums and independent projects tailored around their professional needs and research interests. The program is designed to develop a robust network of cultural agents who are invested in advanced, innovative curatorial practices with performance. Emerging curators, cultural workers, and artists from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
