MFA in Intermedia + Digital Arts (IMDA)

UMBC’s Intermedia + Digital Arts (IMDA) MFA program seeks interdisciplinary artists committed to art that poses unique conceptual and social challenges. We provide artists a studio; teaching opportunities; courses in emerging methods, contemporary art and theory; engaged faculty; and research centers. During their course of study, IMDA grads mount their thesis exhibition in UMBC’s prestigious Center for Art, Design, and Visual Culture. Graduate students get involved in a broad range of interdisciplinary creative research, pursuing issues such as the environment, street interventions, distributed networks, race and gender identity, gift economies, food justice, and bio art.

IMDA’s newly renovated studios are located in downtown Baltimore in the historic Lion Brothers Building. The UMBC main campus offers state-of-the-art media facilities to support audio, video, installations, performances, photography, print making, interactive and physical computing, digital fabrication, and a broad range of interdisciplinary science and technology in both intellectual and formal terms. 

IMDA graduates are prepared for a lifetime of creative productivity, having acquired the skills, focus, and commitment that propels an adventurous and personal artistic practices to a new level. IMDA alumni present their work at distinguished museums, galleries, festivals and conferences around the world and have garnered long-term support from prestigious granting sources. Many have successful gallery representation, run their own artists’ spaces, work in the production industry, and have become academic leaders at some of the most rigorous art academies and universities in the field, while others have become part of the early wave of artists to earn doctoral degrees in emerging fields of practice-based arts research, especially in service to digital media.

Financial support for teaching and creative research assistantships includes tuition remission, health care and a stipend. Graduate students are also eligible for competitive fellowships and merit-based grants.
