NABA - Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti, the largest private academy in Italy recognized by the MIUR (Italian Ministry of Education, Universities and Research), founded in Milan in 1980, is opening its new campus in Rome and launches a call for applications for the BA and summer programs in Painting and Visual Arts.

Occupying two historical early 20th century buildings in the lively and culturally stimulating Garbatella quarter, in southeast central Rome, the new NABA location extends over 3700 square metres, offering its students cutting-edge specialized laboratories, spacious student facilities, a library, lounge rooms and the administrative offices. The strategically located and well connected Campus will allow talented students from all over the world to study and discover the Capital of Western civilization, where classical, Renaissance and contemporary art and traditions meet.

The new school’s academic offering, available from autumn 2019, includes NABA’s flagship BA Program in Painting and Visual Arts founded on the belief that the role of the artist today goes well beyond the limits of the art world and that the artistic vision has become crucial in an image and communication-centered culture. The course thus reinterprets and expands the traditional academic approach to painting and visual arts by encouraging experimentation with a full array of artistic techniques and media.

The new program is managed by NABA Visual Arts Department, an interdisciplinary institute integrating a wide range of contemporary artistic practices. Directed by Marco Scotini since 2005, it is a place for production and exchange, where art becomes an experimental pedagogical tool, bridging together areas such as visual arts, curatorial studies, exhibition making, cultural studies, critical writing and art economy.

Since 2004, faculty and visiting professors have included: John Akomfrah, Marc Augé, Nanni Balestrini, Carlos Basualdo, Ute Meta Bauer, Erick Beltran, Daniel Birnbaum, Roger M. Buergel, Vincenzo Castella, Catherine David, Gianluca e Massimiliano De Serio, Umberto Eco, Charles Esche, Heiner Goebbels, Peter Friedl, Hou Hanru, Joan Jonas, Vasif Kortun, Maurizio Lazzarato, Marcello, Maloberti, Christian Marazzi, Chus Martinez, Angela Melitopoulos, Trinh T. Minh-ha, Viktor Misiano, Deimantas Narkevicius, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Adrian Paci, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Grazia Quaroni, Tim Rollins, Eyal Sivan, Nomeda and Gediminas Urbonas.

Applications for the academic year 2019–20 are now open, and students enrolling before January 31 can benefit from a 10% reduction early bird offer. The BA program in Painting and Visual Arts is taught both in Italian and English language.

The new Rome campus also offers a variety of summer courses (including Portrait Drawing and Painting) to students who want to make the most of their summer break to be immersed in Rome’s thriving creative community while developing their artistic skills. All the NABA summer courses last two weeks and are taught in English by Italian and international professionals.

Thanks to its presence in both Milan and Rome, NABA also offers unique Dual City summer courses in the area of Fine Arts (Classical Art Discovery and Sketching around Rome in Rome and Contemporary Art Discovery and Sketching around Milan in Milan), allowing students to spend one week in Milan and one in Rome to complete their understanding of Italian culture and art.

Applications for summer 2019 are now open, and students enrolling before January 11 can benefit from a 20% reduction in the tuition fee for courses taking place in Rome or for the Dual City programs thanks to the early bird offer.
