“In Our Time: A Year of Architecture in a Day”

The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s all-day symposium “In Our Time: A Year of Architecture in a Day” returns on Saturday, January 19, 2019. Devoted to the most exciting and critical spatial projects of 2018, the event will present a global spectrum of innovative and socially conscious architecture, contemporary art, photography, and cutting-edge research. The speakers include renowned international architects, artists, curators, theorists, and filmmakers who will discuss and present on vital new projects completed in the past twelve months that touch on the most pressing issues of our time. In its third year, the symposium will be held from 10:30am to 6:30pm in the Grace Rainey Rogers Auditorium at The Met Fifth Avenue.  

The program’s keynote speaker, Eyal Weizman, will discuss the interdisciplinary research agency Forensic Architecture, which he founded in 2010, where strategic visualization practices are applied to politics, complex court cases, and conflict zones. Also speaking is Bolivian architect Freddy Mamani, whose vivid buildings in El Alto celebrate the region’s indigenous culture, and Brazilian architect Carla Juacaba who will present her pavilion for the Vatican Chapel at Venice as part of the day’s Projects of the Year section.

The symposium will include a conversation between Elizabeth Diller, Founding Partner and Director of Diller Scofidio + Renfro, David Lang, composer, and Beatrice Galilee, Daniel Brodsky Associate Curator of Architecture and Design at The Met, about The Mile-Long Opera: a biography of 7 o’clock. Ute Meta Bauer, Director of the Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore, will moderate the panel discussion “In Our Future—Design in a Post-Human Age” with Kate Crawford, the co-founder and co-director (with Meredith Whittaker) of the AI Now Institute, James Bridle multidisciplinary artist and author of New Dark Age, and Vincent Fournier, photographer and creator of the “Space Project” series. In this session, artists, designers and anthropologists will explore design and architecture in an era of artificial intelligence and the necessary adaptation of our species to the new climates and territories of the future.
