The Department of Arts, Culture and Media at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in the area of Studio Art. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, and will commence on July 1, 2019, or shortly thereafter.

Applicants are required to have a graduate degree in Fine Arts or a related area (minimum of a Master’s degree). A PhD, at the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter, would be an asset. Candidates must have a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching and must be accomplished practicing artists working primarily with digital photography and photo-based methodologies. Candidates must be able to demonstrate an active engagement with current theoretical and artistic developments on a local and global level, preferably with a specialization in photo-based practice as it relates to issues of indigeneity, gender, race and/or diasporic communities. We seek candidates who will excel in working within our interdisciplinary arts department where horizontal connections among faculty of different fields are encouraged.

The successful candidate will be expected to undertake independent research and/or creative professional activity at the highest international level and to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded program of research or practice-based work. The candidate must have an emerging record of artistic accomplishments and will provide evidence of excellence in their professional activity or research as demonstrated in an international record of creative achievement that includes invited exhibitions, residences, commissions, juried awards and/or prizes, publications and strong endorsements by referees of high international standing.

The successful candidate will teach and supervise students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. They must bring a pedagogical expertise in photography and have an emerging teaching record that encompasses practice-based studio courses in digital image-making, with an emphasis in digital photography and contemporary photo-based practices suited for an interdisciplinary visual and media arts curriculum. The successful candidate will participate in curriculum development, lab design, and departmental and university committee work in order to contribute to interdisciplinary departmental initiatives and to take a leadership role in program and curriculum development. Experience in these areas is welcomed.
