2019 has been an exciting year at The New Centre for Research & Practice. We are continuing to grow, offering more Seminars from a diverse group of instructors, hosting more events and expanding our resources to support the work and careers of our Researchers, Students, Instructors, Alumni, Friends & Members.

We are thrilled to announce our fall 2019 schedule with Seminars from David Auerbach, Anil Bawa-Cavia, Amanda Beech, Ben Miller, Serubiri Moses, Reza Negarestani, Daniel Sacillotto, Mohammad Salemy, Patrick Schabus, and Klaus Speidel. To see the complete list and register, please visit our Seminars page

We are also announcing several Scholarships for the fall 2019 enrollments. To apply, please complete this form and email us at registrar [at] thenewcentre.org with a cover letter outlining why you need a scholarship along with a writing sample. The deadline for applications is Tuesday, September 3 at 11:59 EDT.

Starting this September, in addition to Scholarships, we will be offering paid work-study to our Certificate Students.

This August, The New Centre will help to finalize 15 independent research projects supported by Prince Claus Fund, Hivos, and the European Cultural Foundation as part of The Force of Art initiative. The project’s aim is to investigate how art and culture affect people and their social contexts around the globe. From August 25 to 31, The New Centre will host a series of live sessions where the Force of Art researchers will present their projects to each other and to interested parties from the organizing institutions.

Since last year, in addition to our core Seminars, we have been offering a series of Survey Seminars. Two of our recently completed ones “Curatorial Expediency & Algorithmic Organization of Exhibitions” and “Methodologies of Artistic Practice Now” are now available in the Archive for The New Centre Members. Starting on August 4 2019, Leonardo Dellanoce of the Digital Earth and Francesco Degl’Innocenti of Volume Project will teach our “Architecture After the Internet” Seminar with seven invited architects, architecture theorists, and artists who have made significant contributions to the discipline in recent years. To learn more and register, please visit here.

Hyper Annotations, organized by our Parallel Academia Group, took place during the pre-opening days of the 58th edition of the Venice Biennale and was produced in collaboration with Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary Academy (TBA21-Acadamy). The event was based on short conversations with artists, curators, and other art professionals who were in Venice to attend the Biennale’s opening ceremonies. Hyper Annotations conversations can be viewed here.

This past January, our Parallel Academia Group organized Interlocutories at Spike Berlin as part of Transmediale’s Vorspiel. During this all-day event, nine Researchers & Students from The New Centre presented their work to their Instructors, engaging in a series of one-to-one virtual and physical conversations in front of a live audience. The event culminated in the screening of our Alumni Manuel Correa’s 2015 film, #artoffline followed by a panel discussion with the artist and Julieta Aranda. The video recording of the event is available here

Late last year, Intelligence and Spirit by The New Centre’s Critical Philosophy Programmer Reza Negarestani was published by Urbanomic/Sequence Press to wide acclaim. Several projects have been launched to further investigate and expand on the ideas in this book including the ongoing reading group Transcendental Computationalism as well as the review “STUPIDITY & GEIST” by The New Centre Instructor Anil Bawa-Cavia on our publishing imprint &&& (Triple Ampersand).

We also want to congratulate some of our Certificate Students for their recent acceptance into graduate school programs. This fall, Keli Safia Maksud will begin studying towards her Masters of Fine Arts at Colombia University, James Boyd will begin studying towards a Masters of Arts at The New School for Social Research, majoring in Artificial Intelligence and Future Studies, and Theodore Craig will begin his Masters of Philosophy at Georgia State University.

This fall, The New Centre will be cosponsoring Algorithms of Child Play at Bildraum 7 a solo exhibition by Vienna-based Serbian artist Dejan Kaludjerović.

For the month of August, we have limited annual Memberships available for 75 USD at half the regular rate of 150 USD.
