Application deadline: March 15, 2019
Valand Academy at the University of Gothenburg is offering two international distance courses in fine art and photography for the summer of 2019. The courses are free to EU nationals. Apply by March 15.
Photographic project is a course where you work independently with a photographic project. During the course a great emphasis is placed on the discussion on photography and the creative process. You will work with an individual project on any theme and be given the opportunity to develop your own visual language and increase your understanding of the artistic process.
The course is aimed at those who already have some or extensive technical knowledge in analogue or digital photography and want to develop their own creative process, contextualizing their images and in a constructive manner help develop other students work as well as taking on board other students’ feedback in their own work.
The course is a distance course with optional meetings on location. You will need access to a computer, a stable internet connection, microphone and web camera in order to participate at tutorials and meetings online. During the course you will present your photographic project on a regular basis to tutors and your peers, and through group discussions and individual tutoring you will develop your ability to critically analyse photography, your own process as well as your peers.
Introduction to Contemporary Arts and Politics focuses on the long tradition of interaction between questions of politics and questions of art. Through the course you will have an opportunity to build your own map of the contemporary art field and the different ways it intersects—or fails to intersect—with questions of the political. We will also explore together how this may now be changing under the impact of recent changes in the wider political field. As part of this process you will also be given a brief introduction to some of the key theorists and ideas shaping contemporary political theory and debate.
The course is based on a combination of distance education and participation at one intensive workshop (from a choice of three) in one of these three cities: Dublin, Venice or Gothenburg. The teaching team is led by Prof. Mick Wilson with invited guests at the workshop intensives. The course is taught as a distance course through English, and includes online presentations based on pre-set readings and viewing of material online.
The course addresses issues as diverse as the relationship between art and activism, feminism, queer culture, ecological crisis, postcolonialism, decoloniality, racism, xenophobia, anti-capitalism, the role of the avant-garde, renewed nationalisms, institutional critique, self-organisation, and many other conjunctions of art and politics, ranging across the macro- and the micro-political scale.
