New two-year research programme for choreographic development
STUDIOS is a 2-year fulltime research programme for dance-makers and choreographers, who intend to develop their creative voice and practice, in a learning environment that is communal and collaborative.

The STUDIOS programme is about giving young dance makers space, time and focus to develop a personal creative practice in the field of contemporary dance.

It offers: skills to develop, question and renew their craft in making dance; new perspectives, including from different disciplines and cultural backgrounds, to widen their vision; theoretical tools to sharpen the articulation of their ideas and practices; coaching, exchange and dialogue to develop new insights about one’s own work and methodologies; a community of peers to share research and working practices.

STUDIOS is aimed at young dance-makers and choreographers who have obtained at least a BA degree in dance or choreography and have very good English skills.

PARTS searches for candidates with a strong dance and performance skills and a creative practice that is rooted in studio work. This does not exclude other profiles and approaches.

PARTS aims for a group of 12 participants between 21 and 27 years old. The group will consist of graduates of the PARTS Training Cycle and participants recruited through the audition.

Content

The program develops along the following lines:

(A) to start the day
Students can choose between following a daily dance class (yoga, contemporary, ballet), which is organised in collaboration with the Rosas dance company, or an individual theory programme (reading and writing)

(B) self-directed research
The participants develop their own research and creation projects, in collaboration with their peers and possibly guests. Coaching is provided by the pedagogical team and additional mentors.

In the second year, students make their end-of-studies creation in an extended period of 11 weeks. The resulting works will be presented to the public in professional theatres. Parts of the creation period can take place in residencies at professional theatres or residency spaces in Brussels or elsewhere.

(C) movement research workshops
Experienced dance artists work on different methods and strategies for generating, building and writing movement.

(D) choreography masterclasses
Experienced choreographers working in different contexts and artists from other fields share their creative practices, methodologies and reflections.

(E) theory
Seminars dealing with topics ranging from performance studies, philosophy and research methodology to writing and communication skills. The theory programme includes the writing and/or presentation of essays and papers.
In the second year, all students write a thesis which is a reflection starting from the research and questions of their final creation.

(F) cross-cultural thinking and creation
The programme will include several artists and thinkers from other parts of the globe as well as two specific projects taking place outside Europe, in Taiwan and Senegal.

Context
The programme takes place on a campus which also hosts the PARTS Training programme (45 students), choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaker and the Rosas company (20+ dancers), the Ictus Ensemble and its students of the Advanced Master Contemporary Music.
