Frans Masereel Centrum—one of Europe’s biggest, and recently expanded, centres for print art—launches an open call for its 2019 school residencies. Your MA, MFA and postgrad students of all artistic orientations will be inspired and energized by this unique and intensive learning experience amidst the scenic Flemish countryside near Antwerp. This year, Frans Masereel Centrum hosts 1 or 2 week stays, as well as themed ten-day masterclasses focussing on the future of print (art).
Regular programme
Between October 11 and November 8, 2019
From intaglio to screen-printing, from woodcuts to lasercuts: the Frans Masereel Centrum’s analogue and digital ateliers can accommodate any artist wanting to explore printmaking, whether they are photogravure buffs or have never operated a risograph. Our expert printmakers will be on standby to help your teaching staff guide its students through techniques of your choosing and assist them in completing their individual projects. Moreover, during your stay (of one or two weeks), FMC hosts artist meetings and artist talks with speakers attuned to your pupils’ fields of study and aligned to your school’s DNA. Culmination of the residence is an exhibition, open to the public and art professionals.
Ten-day Masterclass
Between November 13 and December 6, 2019
What does the future hold for the printed image and word? What pressing issues will be posed in 60 years’ time if the fleetingness of today’s digital age persists? Will we be able to acclimatize the digital with the analogue? Will print, one of the most accessible and democratic mediums, disappear? Or will it, for instance, find refuge in some kind of underground resistance? And what new forms and carriers will ensure its survival? These are only some of the questions on which Frans Masereel Centrum, together with internationally renowned artists such as åbäke, builds its ten-day masterclass. Students and teachers will be inspired by multiple artist talks, extra muros activities and advanced workshop programmes—helmed by an elite of external artists—centred on an extended list of techniques. The masterclass programme culminates in a big exhibition where your students’ works will be shown next to that of established artists.
