To celebrate the 100th issue of e-flux journal, please join us for a special evening at Bar Laika on Wednesday, May 15 at 9pm.

Kaye Cain-Nielsen, editor in chief of e-flux journal, will introduce the evening. Noel W Anderson will perform his recent essay “Echoes from the Hole: Doubling Darkness Is Most Dark” with possible support from musical cues. There will be a reading by Pedro Neves Marques—author most recently of “Parallel Futures: One or Many Dystoipas?.”

Njål Paulsberg then takes the floor for an improvised, 30-minute set on three synthesizers and effects to a selection of short films by the legendary filmmaker Jean Painlevé.

Free admission, cash bar
Happy Hour: 9pm till midnight!

Noel W Anderson is a Clinical Assistant Professor in New York University’s Art and Art Professions Department, and Area Head of Print Media. Originally from Louisville, Kentucky, he holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Ohio Wesleyan University, a Master of Fine Arts in printmaking from Indiana University, and a Master of Fine Arts in sculpture from Yale University. Anderson’s research considers aesthetics as a means of redressing the constrictive configurations informing the politics of black representation. He has received awards from the New York Foundation for the Arts and the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts, and he recently completed a major residency in papermaking at Dieu Donné in Brooklyn, New York. His essay “Confederacies, Tensilities, Fugitivities: Those Eyes,” coauthored with Andrew Weiner, was published in the summer 2018 issue of October. His essay “Schien, Schein Negro Sun: Black Radical Radiance” will be published in the summer 2019 issue of Effects Art Journal. Anderson’s works have been exhibited at the Studio Museum of Harlem, the Tilton Gallery (NYC), and the Zidoun-Bossuyt Gallery (Luxembourg). A major solo exhibition is scheduled for fall 2019 at the Hunter Museum of American Art, located in Chattanooga, Tennesee.

Pedro Neves Marques is a writer, visual artist, and filmmaker. He is the editor of the anthology The Forest and the School: Where to Sit at the Dinner Table? (2015) and author of two short story collections, most recently Morrer na América (Dying in America) (2017). He has exhibited or screened his work at, among others, e-flux, Anthology Film Archives, Gasworks, Tate Modern, Jeu de Paume, Pérez Art Museum of Miami, V-A-C Foundation, and Berardo Museum Collection.

The films of Jean Painlevé (1902–89) are surrealist-influenced dream works of serious science. The French filmmaker-scientist-inventor created hundreds of short films on subjects ranging from astronomy to pigeons to marine-life marvels such as the sea horse and the octopus.

Njål Paulsberg is a musician based in Bergen, Norway. He plays in Young Dreams, Aurora, Evigheten, Put your hands up for neo tokyo, and Advanced Language, in addition to recording and producing music. He also plays improvised silent movie concerts.

Kaye Cain-Nielsen is editor-in-chief of e-flux journal. Previously she served as the journal’s managing editor as well as books series editor, and was managing and special issues editor for Guernica among other publications. She remains a periodical writer and musician living in Queens, New York.
