The Institute of Modern Art (IMA) is pleased to Certain Situations, a solo exhibition by Agatha Gothe-Snape, curated by Madeleine King, alongside a new program for Queensland artists, IMA Belltower at the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts.
Agatha Gothe-Snape: Certain Situations
This solo-exhibition brings together a number of energetic strands of Australian artist Agatha Gothe-Snape’s practice: visual and spatial interventions, score-based improvisation, and collaboration. Text, sculpture, moving image, and performance are organised in into a series of ambient spaces that merge with the artist’s internal monologues, producing a kind of psychic architecture. Acknowledging the performative interplay between audience and exhibition, visitors are choreographed by the spaces and objects they encounter.
The exhibition centres around Five Columns, a five-channel video installation by Wrong Solo—Gothe-Snape’s longstanding collaboration with performance artist Brian Fuata. This new work is supported by the IMA in partnership with Monash University Museum of Art (MUMA), and is accompanied by a series of performative, social, and spatial interventions into the gallery.
IMA Belltower at the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts
Arts Queensland has created a new gallery space from a former commercial tenancy and supported the Institute of Modern Art (IMA) to develop the one-year pilot program of visual art exhibitions. From June 2019, IMA Belltower takes place in a new purpose-built 90m² corner gallery space at the intersection of Brunswick and Berwick Streets, Fortitude Valley, Brisbane.
IMA Belltower will present five exhibitions over the twelve-month program, as well as moving-image artworks projected on the building’s façade.
The first exhibition, currently on display, is by Mandy Quadrio, alongside a new public projection work by Sebastian Moody. Other artists in the program include Robert Andrew, Alfredo and Isabel Aquilizan, and Janet Fieldhouse. The program is curated by Freja Carmichael, a Ngugi woman belonging to the Quandamooka People of Moreton Bay, who joined the IMA in 2018 as Visiting Curator. IMA Belltower presents some of the most exciting voices from around the state, and supports the development of a number of new artworks by Queensland artists.
