Christie’s Education, New York offers a part-time certificate program that combines academic study of modern and contemporary art with wide-ranging exposure to the vibrant New York art world.
You may enroll in a single term (i.e. fall, winter or spring) or the full nine-month program (i.e. September 11, 2019–June 7, 2020). The Modern and Contemporary Art Survey course meets every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday morning. It chronologically surveys art from 1850 to the present over the three terms.
There is also a seminar one afternoon per week, which involves some classroom time, but mostly entails guided field studies to art-related sites in and around New York. These visits include artists’ studios, galleries, museums and private collections, among other venues.
“I found the certificate program’s academic curriculum to be rigorous and inspiring. Lectures given by experts in their fields helped me approach the study of modern and contemporary art from various perspectives. I also valued field trips to cultural institutions that brought classroom lessons to life in visceral and exciting ways. The Certificate in Modern and Contemporary Art at Christie’s Education answered many of my professional and personal goals.”
