Kunstverein München is pleased to announce its new artistic program. Founded in 1823, it is one of the oldest institutions of its kind in Germany. Internationally oriented, with a view to the local context, the Kunstverein discusses its programmatic line in various formats and thus creates a vital and controversial place for the presentation and mediation of contemporary art with regular exhibitions, lectures, artist talks, screenings, and publications.
Diamond Stingily
Wall Sits
September 21–November 17, 2019
Diamond Stingily addresses the materiality of identity and social class. Using everyday found objects such as hair, doors, or chains, she negotiates personal and collective memories by relating them to social and economic questions. Wall Sits is her first institutional solo exhibition in Europe, and presents an overview of various groups of her work, as well as new productions that relate to the Kunstverein and its urban environment. Stingily’s artistic practice encompasses video, sculpture, and writing, and draws relations between the intimacy of one’s own biography and perceptions of history. Instead of working on representation of black communities in general, she examines childhood memories, which, fragmentarily, speak of the systemic racism and violence inscribed into US-American culture. Through the use of found, common materials, she deals with the mutual conditionality of artistic production and social class. Questions of race and gender are often reflected in contemporary artistic discourse on identity politics, but those of social class are largely absent. For Stingily, form is always a means to reflect on origin and therefore class. Who has access to which materials? What can be found, appropriated, utilized? More
The exhibition is accompanied by contributions from artists and writers, such as Michelle Lee Delgado, Sean-Kierre Lyons, Alexsandra Severino, Jennifer Shear, Lyric Shen and Bri Williams.

Boyd’s video Men Assembling: 12/10/2013, 23:55:00 - 12/11/2013, 00:06:48, Channel 4 Television inaugurates Schaufenster, a new onsite and online series simultaneously presenting works in the two permanently accessible spaces of the institution—the window display at the Hofgarten and the website.
Since the 1950s, television has become a fixture in our society. The examination of its mechanisms with regard to its role in the construction of masculinity forms the basis of Boyd’s work. More
Andrea Büttner
What is so terrible about craft?
November 23–December 1, 2019
Andrea Büttner’s new moving image work considers how Western European traditions of craft have been infused with models for life and ways of being. The artist questions whom these models are serving, and how craft is deployed to “heal the wounds of Modernism.” The film considers craft’s ongoing relation to reactionary political movements, its role in national narratives and religious identities, as well as its solutions for societal discontents. Jahresgaben
December 7–15, 2019
The annual Jahresgaben dates back to the founding of the Kunstverein, when members received a print each year as part of their membership. Over time, the format developed into a group exhibition of work by Munich-based artists, providing an overview of artistic production. It is a moment for our members and community to see and discuss works, while benefitting from the chance to purchase art at special prices and thereby supporting the Kunstverein and the local art scene.
Further down the default spiral
The new graphic design is conceived by Enver Hadzijaj. A signet extracted out of overlaying the most standard sans serifs which themselves refer to further different ur-sans serifs. A signet as hauntological passing. The apparition is preset.
