The National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design is Norway’s largest museum, receiving around 650,000 visitors each year. We collect, preserve, exhibit, disseminate, and research the nation’s largest collections of art, architecture, and design. Our four museum buildings in Oslo run a varied programme of exhibitions, a number of which tour nationally and internationally. The National Museum currently has a staff of 150 with expertise in a range of fields.

We are currently preparing to relocate from the present museum buildings to a new building at Vestbanen in 2020. With 55,000 m2 of floor space, the new National Museum will be one of the largest museums in Northern Europe. Its ambition is to inspire new generations of art enthusiasts. We wish to attract more diverse and broader audiences using approaches that are bold, playful, generous, and educational.

The Department of Old Masters and Modern Art is responsible for managing and documenting the museum’s art collections from antiquity to about 1965 (concerning prints and drawings up to the present), and for making them accessible via exhibitions, the print room, publications, and digital media.

The position involves particular responsibility for the field of paper-based art (and possibly also photography prior to 1945), with primary emphasis on international material from the 20th and 21st centuries. The position involves responsibility for planning and realisation of exhibitions, collection work, and research and development work in the department’s field of expertise and activity, covering older and modern art. The successful candidate will also participate in projects and processes relating to preparations for the relocation to, the relocation itself, and the opening of the new National Museum. 

Responsibilities
–Routine and specialist management of the collection of paper-based art including administrative and practical work with the collection, based on expert knowledge of the field, and related tasks in the print room
–Planning and realisation of exhibitions
–Further development of national and international networks, and external representation of the museum relevant to the field of specialisation
–Participation in departmental meetings, programming work, and internal liaising
–Answering written and oral enquiries from visitors and researchers
–Making proposals to the museum’s purchasing committee
–The successful candidate will be allowed and required to conduct research and development work
–Other tasks as agreed with immediate superior

Qualifications
–A minimum of an MA in art history. For senior curator status, a PhD is required
–Proven expertise in the specialist field as described. A list of publications is to be submitted with the application
–A minimum of three years’ relevant museum experience
–Excellent written and oral presentation skills in Norwegian and English, and preferably another European language as well, such as French, Italian or Dutch (foreign applicants are expected to acquire Norwegian in an adequate time)
–Access to a broad international network in the field
–Good computer skills and an ability to keep abreast of relevant software developments

–An ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, and great flexibility
–An ability to enthuse others, to inspire team spirit, and to contribute to open debates
–A knowledge of and interest in collection work is essential
–Meticulousness, reliability and a capacity to get things done
–Good communications skills
