Jimei X Arles: Encounters Between East and West—International Photo Festival
15 November–16 December 2015

Constructed by the position and work practice of the curators and artists, the Jimei X Arles: East West Encounters International Photo Festival will be launched on 15 November 2015. From the originators and consultants to the curators and artists, all participants will present the benefits which were brought by the encounters between East and West.

According to the project arrangement of this exhibition, Li Zhenhua, the CEO of this photo festival, emphasizes the issues of artists’ positions and work practices, generating nine special topics, such as Audio Visual, City Navigation, Double Nostalgia, Extended Photography, Independent Photography, Local Action, etc. As an independent project, each special topic interacts with the others, and the intertextuality among them weaves a reticulated structure, showing the visualized encounters between East and West.

Moreover, among the five top-leveled exhibitions, which were selected by the Les Rencontres d’Arles International Photo Festival and will be carried out in Jimei, Xiamen City, the most notable project is 8½—a solo exhibition of Paul Ronald, who recently passed away, presenting a series of color photographs which document the shooting process of the film 8½ by famous director Federico Fellini. This exhibition is curated by Sam Stourdzé, the director of Les Rencontres d’Arles, and is the must-see show of the Jimei X Arles International Photo Festival.

Meanwhile, taking on the city as a whole, the Jimei X Arles International Photo Festival also approaches the field of human geography. Both the Kassel Project by Tang Jing and the Big Character by Ju Anqi record and reflect the artists’ individual observations and considerations of the city and suburb. For the audiences, meanwhile, the most reliable and accessible projects are the exhibitions which reflect the production of photography in our daily life—just like the animation project Photo Recycle by Lei Lei and the exhibition Daily Snapshot by Du Xiyun and Zong Jian, both of which focus on the reflection of daily production of photography.
