We are excited to share our latest developments and our plans for the upcoming year. In 2019, The New Centre for Research & Practice experienced substantial growth, with more researchers and students joining than ever before. In response, our growing number of seminars allow participants to engage in deeper discussions and to build further upon their work. We are currently in the process of expanding our certificate program from one year to two years in order to accommodate the scope of these new developments. Those joining us this year will be able to attend twice as many seminars, engage in more rigorous research projects, and participate in longer work-study programs.

For the month of December, we have limited annual memberships available for 75 USD at half the regular rate of 150 USD. Click this PayPal link to subscribe. In addition to supporting an artist-run alternative educational platform, by becoming a member, you will access our entire seminar archives, along with many other resources. Memberships are also available at 15 USD a month. To learn more and subscribe please visit our membership page.

We are thrilled to announce our upcoming schedule with the following instructors: Brunella Antomarini, Antoine Bousquet, Andrei Chitu, Jason Bahbak Mohaghegh, Colin Drumm, Allen Feldman, Valentin Golev, Anna Longo, Reza Negarestani, Joevenn Neo, Alice Lucy Rekab, Daniel Sacilotto, Anne-Françoise Schmid, Klaus Speidel, and Tony Yanick. In addition, João Enxuto will start our spring seminars by moderating “Artistic Methodology: from Research to Praxis.” Rachael Rakes will moderate “Essay Events,” a seminar on the essay film, and Adnan Yıldız will moderate “A paradigm shift: Curating in the Age of Continuous Mediation.” For more information on these seminars or to register, visit our seminar page

Currently, we are offering several scholarships for the spring/summer certificate programs. To apply, please complete this form and email applications [at] thenewcentre.org with a cover letter outlining why you need a scholarship along with a writing sample. The deadline for applications is Sunday, January 12, 2020, 11:59 pm EST. The New Centre is proud to offer support and services to advance the trajectory of our students, alumni, and researchers. In addition to scholarships, we now offer paid work-study including seminar moderation, archival development, and social media management to accelerate students’ research, education, and future careers.

On February 1, 2020, The New Centre will be hosting its first student-organized symposium, “Alien Processes: Reproduction & Time,” to discuss related topics and issues. The event is sponsored by the Center for Transformative Media. It will take place at The New School for Social Research in New York and will be streamed on our platform. If you’d like to present your work in the symposium, email your proposal to symposium [at] thenewcentre.org by December 20, 2019. Abstracts should be 250–300 words, formatted as a Word document, accompanied by a short bio.

The New Centre will be releasing a series of books in 2020. We are excited to publish François Laruelle’s dissertation and previously untranslated first book, Phenomenon and Difference: Essay on the Ontology of Ravaisson, translated by Lindsay Lerman including a foreword by our Board Member and Instructor Katerina Kolozova. We will be publishing two new books by our Certificate Students, Jaimie Boyd and Ekin Erkan, on their respective research, in addition to an anthology collection of long papers by students and instructors.

Our online publishing platform, tripleampersand.org, has been recently redesigned and is updated on a regular basis with articles from our instructors, students, members, and researchers.

In September 2019, we organized a public training session as part of the “Training for the Future” program during the Ruhrtriennale Art Festival in Boham, Germany. The session engaged hybrid methodologies of Instagram memes and short fiction on Twitter. During this month, The New Centre cosponsored Algorithms of Child Play at Bildraum 7, a solo exhibition by Vienna-based artist Dejan Kaludjerović. In May 2020, The New Centre, in conjunction with Richmond Art Gallery in British Columbia, Canada, will host a five-year anniversary follow-up to the Incredible Machines Conference (2014) in Vancouver, brainstorming ways to broaden artists’ and thinkers’ access to data analysis tools and algorithmic logic. Stay tuned!
