Dani Gal is a visual artist working in film and sound. He investigates how personal and collective histories and memorisations are produced, selected and carried through time and space. By means of intense research and the examination of historical visual, written and audio documents, his artworks closely connect with political occurrences and contemporary cultural narratives.
From August to October 2019 the artist resides in Vienna on the invitation of Blood Mountain to research at the Vienna Wiesenthal Institute, to undertake study trips in Central Europe, and to present an expansive programme of public events.
Gal’s residency is part of Blood Mountain’s research and curatorial programme, The Nordbahnhof Project and reflects the organisation’s founding mission to support the process and production of outstanding creative practices via its artists-in-residence.
Dani Gal (born 1975, Jerusalem) lives and works in Berlin. He studied at the Bezalel Academy for Art and Design in Jerusalem, the Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste Städelschule in Frankfurt and the Cooper Union in New York. His films and works have been shown at the Centre Pompidou in Paris (2018), Documenta 14 (2017), Kunsthalle Wien (2015), Kunsthaus in Zurich (2015), Berlinale Forum Expanded (2014), Jewish Museum in New York (2014), Kunsthalle in St. Gallen Switzerland (2013), New Museum in New York (2012), 54th Venice Biennale (2011), and the Istanbul Biennale (2011).
Blood Mountain Projects is an independent research and curatorial platform with a mission to examine the cultural past present and potential of Central Europe. Founded in 2010 as a non-profit arts organisation in Budapest, and following many years as an international satellite, it operates since 2018 as a curatorial practice and public programme based in Vienna. Activities include research-based curatorial projects, artists-in-residence, new commissions, public events, education and publications.
