The 2020 iterations of the Guggenheim’s annual Asian Art Circle Presents and Middle Eastern Circle Presents program series will take place virtually over the course of two weeks in December. Artists Kenneth Tam and Tala Madani will be in conversation with Guggenheim curators, streamed for free on the museum’s YouTube channel. Accompanying these live programs, films by both artists will be made available to stream at no cost on the Guggenheim’s website.

Online artist talk: Kenneth Tam
Thursday, December 10, 7pm EST

Artist Kenneth Tam and Sophia Marisa Lucas, Assistant Curator, Queens Museum, join Kyung An, Assistant Curator, Asian Art, to discuss the virtual premiere of Tam’s film Silent Spikes (2020). In this new work, Tam considers how Asian men have been stereotyped and maligned and uses the figure of the cowboy as a way to re-imagine tropes of American masculinity.

Silent Spikes incorporates visual and narrative references to the labor strike organized by Chinese Transcontinental Railroad workers in 1867 in order to reflect on the legacy of this often overlooked but historically significant act of defiance. Working collaboratively with participants, Tam explores expressions of male subjectivity that resist oppression, and asks, “What might Asian American masculinity look like?”

The Silent Spikes virtual premiere will be available for viewing beginning December 9, 7pm, through December 12, 7pm. The video can be accessed on the Guggenheim’s website.

Online artist talk: Tala Madani
Thursday, December 17, 12pm EST

Iranian American artist Tala Madani makes paintings and animations that use humorous, fantastical imagery and a rich painterly expressionism to critique notions of representation, gender, authority, and identity. In this online talk, Madani discusses her creative practice and her recent series Shit Moms with Jessica Cerasi, Assistant Curator, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi.

Register to receive a tune-in reminder.

A selection of Madani’s animations is available for viewing beginning December 16, 7pm, through December 20, 7pm. The video can be accessed on the Guggenheim’s website.
