The Massachusetts Institute of Technology believes the arts strengthen MIT’s commitment to the aesthetic, human, and social dimensions of research and innovation.

As the contemporary art museum at MIT, the List Visual Arts Center supports the broader values of the Institute’s mission.  By serving as a creative laboratory to provide artists with the space to experiment and push boundaries, the Center is committed to providing meaningful context for understanding how the contemporary visual arts reflect and express complex social and cultural issues in a changing world.

The List Visual Arts Center seeks a curator of contemporary art to join its programming team.

Candidates should have a minimum seven years of museum administration or curatorial experience; an extensive knowledge of international contemporary art, art history, and theory; and a demonstrated ability to work well with a team and be an inspiring leader. The ideal candidate will demonstrate excellence in writing and editing catalogue essays, texts, brochures and other educational materials; an ability to solicit and obtain funds; and demonstrated ability to create, manage, and meet budgets.

The List Center presents a dynamic annual program of six to nine gallery exhibitions. Exhibitions change regularly and recent presentations have featured artists such as Edgar Arcenaux, Rosa Barba, Tala Madani, and Kapwani Kiwanga. An ongoing exhibition initiative, begun in 2013, known as List Projects presents tightly focused solo exhibitions that feature newly emerging and underrepresented artists.  In addition to its exhibitions, the Center produces a wide range of educational programs, events, and scholarly publications for multiple audiences. The List Center also administers MIT’s permanent collection; commissions new campus public art works through the MIT Percent-for-Art program; and oversees the Student Lending Art Program that lends approximately 600 works of art annually to MIT students.

We are interested in hiring a creative and innovative curator who values adventurous museum programming that reflects the spirit of academic research. The ideal candidate should demonstrate the ability to recognize significant art themes and emerging artists, to create exhibitions that communicate vividly; and to support and develop related programs that enhance the audience experience. The curator of contemporary art at the List Center should demonstrate the ability to work with artists in diverse  programming formats, including artist residencies, and should be comfortable making connections with MIT faculty, students, and administration in addition to traditional art audiences.

Deadline to apply: November 15, 2019.
