MAMM Medellín opens new building and renews its exhibition, public, and cultural programs
September and October.

In September, the Medellín Museum of Modern Art (MAMM) opens a new building three times its current capacity with new exhibition spaces, theater and music rooms, multiple classrooms, offices and other accompanying services.  The new building will be inaugurated with the exhibition of the MAMM collection, which will finally be permanently exhibited (not possible until now given previous space constraints), and a renewed and varied program of exhibitions and events that will position it as the leading place for contemporary art in Colombia.

The Museum called an international architecture competition in 2010 whose winners were the architecture firms 51 + 1 (Peru) and Ctrl -G (Colombia). The winning design for the expansion was inspired by the “informal incremental” construction that occurs in the slopes of Medellin—characterized by overlapping volumes connected with stairs.

The new building, with five levels and 7,220 square meters, will complement the current headquarters, Talleres Robledo, an old steel factory originally built in 1938 and renovated in 2009 to house the museum. The new addition launches an academic, artistic, and cultural program that goes far beyond the inauguration. The program will run during the second half of 2015 to enable visitors to explore the MAMM from different angles and in dialogue with the local, national, and international art circuit.

The complete opening schedule will be announced shortly. In the meantime, we are pleased to announce the following exhibitions and events. We look forward to seeing you in Medellin.

Inaugural Program

Opening exhibition
September 2
In the new building, the MAMM renews its vision of the collection with three exhibitions featuring works from its major thematic clusters, many of which will be on view for the first time since their acquisition.

The Talleres Robledo building welcomes Muestrario, the first retrospective exhibition of Colombian master draftsman José Antonio Suárez Londoño, now on view at La Casa Encendida (Madrid) and at the Contemporary Art Museum of Bordeaux (CAPC) from April, and the exhibit In and Between Geographies, addressing various aspects of the contemporary condition through geography, understood as knowledge and exploration of physical space, but also the mental, psychological, intellectual, and virtual.

A number of performative and exhibition projects in dance, film and music, will also be scheduled to set the tone for the museum’s new stage.

October: Colombian Art Circuit

MAMM Medellín
The Medellín Museum of Modern Art will host a series of events designed especially for national and international guests who want to explore the new dimension of the museum immediately after the ARTBO art fair. During the week of 5 October a series of talks and meetings will be held, in addition to a full program of theater, music, dance and other cultural activities.
