The master’s programme in Embedded Design encourages you to critically reflect upon your role as a designer and meet the growing demand for innovative and disruptive design. If you believe design can be a process of change, and want to collaborate with others to disrupt the status quo by addressing global, social and organisational challenges, then apply for the master’s programme in Embedded Design.

In response to the global challenges, companies, organisations, and communities must rethink their value propositions and business models, which requires not only innovations but also disruption of traditional thinking.

“The new programme in Embedded Design addresses the field of design that is particularly situated in complex and systemised contexts and prepares you to be a friendly collaborator while simultaneously taking a critical—and even disruptive—stance in your role within an embedded design practice”, says programme director Claes Johansson.

The programme is based on, and developed from, a previous master programme, called Business & Design.

“We took the learnings and experiences we had from Business & Design and developed it to the new programme, in order to keep up with the changes in society. During the last years, we have seen that design has become broader—nowadays, design professionals are working with design issues in other contexts than traditional”, he continues.

In the programme, you will gain the skills to use design in and around corporations, institutions, public organisations, and society, providing sustainable and long-lasting design solutions.

“In design, you start from a user-centred perspective, but in an embedded design practice, you will also complement this with the mindset and logic of an organisation. A component of the learning is to get critical perspectives towards these complex issues. We are talking about intersectionality, norm criticality, sustainability, circular business models and so on, so that you as a student can see the problems from different sides and perspectives.”

You will also develop a deeper understanding of how design can be used on the organisational level and for social renewal, learning how to approach your projects with considerations of social, ecological, and economical sustainability issues.

“You will become a maker of change and will learn to develop companies, organisations, and institutions by using a strategic and artistic design practice. The programme prepares you to follow both conventional and unconventional design careers, able to work as a collaborative partner while actively taking a critical stance and disrupting the status quo”, says programme director Claes Johansson.
