La scrittura degli echi (The Writing of Echoes) is a project conceived by NERO in the frame of The Independent, a research project by Hou Hanru curated by Giulia Ferracci and Elena Motisi set up to offer a space to independent groups in Italy and abroad, to design a hothouse of new ideas in order to defend and promote independent critical thinking, to expand the frontiers of the museum, to investigate the contemporary world, to encourage a “culture of difference.”
Structured as a daily programme of audio works broadcast over the MAXXI’s public address system, La scrittura degli echi will be occupying the virtual space of the Museum’s service communications to convey an ephemeral but collective voice with free interventions by a number of artists, writers, musicians and thinkers. In the form of recordings, readings, extracts and sound effects, broadcasts will be made daily, at random times, from 27 February to 7 June.
La scrittura degli echi uses MAXXI’s public address system, designed to be invisible, ubiquitous and practical, while modifying its use with a series of sound interventions that enter into the institution’s everyday activities. This choral portrait is a way of producing a form of non-authoritarian self-representation, while also bringing into question the very idea of “representation.” NERO has entrusted the task of expressing itself to the voices that have inhabited it over the past ten years: about 90 artists, writers, photographers, musicians and intellectuals have freely contributed to the project.
NERO is an agency that works in the field of culture and the arts in a number of different sectors and formats. One of its prime objectives is to overcome the barriers between disciplines, bringing to bear new, multi-format investigations and processes of representation in order to create trajectories that go beyond the individual fields of knowledge.
Call for Independents
Starting from March 9, MAXXI calls the most innovative underground creative forces online. Once selected, the voices of experimentation and research will make themselves heard exhibiting their works in the museum but not only. An online platform, dedicated to the project, will include a digital map, constantly evolving, bringing together the free voices of our contemporary age, as a virtual place for information and interaction.
