The Gallatin School of Individualized Study at New York University (NYU) invites applications from visual artists for the position of Clinical Assistant or Clinical Associate Professor in the Visual Arts, a full-time faculty position for an artist and creative pedagogue to commence on September 1, 2020. This is a continuing contract/non-tenure track position.

If the candidate is currently an Associate Professor, they should have been promoted recently. While the medium and field of expertise are open, we are particularly interested in the following: expanded approaches to sculpture, painting, and drawing; installation; and craft forms that meet the expanse of contemporary practice. Artists with a hybridized practice that includes other media in combination with any listed here are also encouraged to apply.

The candidate’s teaching philosophy should encourage students to understand art as a method of inquiry and as a tool that helps students think about their other areas of study. To that end, the candidate should be comfortable in an interdisciplinary and collaborative setting with faculty from a range of disciplinary fields. Candidates must have the ability to teach beyond technique and accommodate students of varying skill levels within one class. As Gallatin has an unconventional studio arts program, the candidate must have experience generating assignments that do not rely entirely on specialized facilities. Although primarily an undergraduate program, the position requires extensive advisement at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as teaching at the MA level. When working with graduate students, it is especially important that the candidate can help students situate their work both historically and within contemporary practice.

Full time faculty teach four courses per year (two in the fall and two in the spring) and serve as a faculty adviser for about 20-25 students. The position is a non-tenure track and renewable contract line, and includes all the rights of full-time faculty within the Gallatin School. A strong track record of innovative teaching across disciplines is required, as well as a proven commitment to service.

The Gallatin Interdisciplinary Arts Program distinguishes itself as a hybrid of arts practice and scholarly inquiry. Through a combination of coursework, lectures, exhibitions, and performance opportunities, students are immersed in the liberal arts, practice, and in research. Modeled on the artist-scholar philosophy of education, the Program invites students to design concentrations that combine intellectual pursuits and creative work, blending theory, research, and practice.

Founded in 1972, Gallatin is a liberal arts college of 1,500 undergraduate students and 150 graduate students located within the major research University of NYU. Its innovative BA and MA programs in individualized study encourage students to develop an integrated, interdisciplinary program of study that combines courses taken in the various schools of NYU with independent studies, internships, and Gallatin’s own interdisciplinary seminars, writing courses and arts workshops. For more information about the Gallatin School, feel free to visit our website at https://gallatin.nyu.edu
