The Department of Art at the School of Arts, Design and Architecture, Aalto University, welcomes applications for its two-year Master’s Programme: Visual Cultures, Curating and Contemporary Art (ViCCA). ViCCA is a hybrid programme consisting of the three fields in its name, the educational aim of the programme is to intertwine these fields in innovative ways to support the emergence of manifold practices and possibilities. A prominent quality of the programme is its consistent merger of theoretical and practice-based artistic processes, offering an opportunity to develop, deepen and re-contextualise one’s prior skills and knowledge.

The ViCCA study programme can be characterised as having a strong transdisciplinary approach across art, science and technology. The programme offers students access to emerging knowledges and practices at the intersections of multiple fields through an arts-driven engagement with societal, political, economic, ecological and philosophical concerns. ViCCA encourages experimentation with diverse artistic practices, contexts and forms of research.

Art, visual culture and the forms of organisation that go into making them public cannot be described as a mirror of society but rather they are and always have been an active agent in worldmaking. ViCCA takes up this perspective and works with students to diversify and develop their knowledge base, offering concrete opportunities to develop research competencies, methodologies and a sense for artistic and critical thinking. The programme is open to artists, practitioners, curators and research-oriented individuals with different backgrounds and experience, who are looking for opportunities to understand, challenge and shift the paradigm of contemporary art and the world around us.

Located in Otaniemi, Espoo, an approx. 11-minute metro ride from Helsinki city centre, the School of Arts, Design and Architecture shares a campus with the Schools of Science, Business, Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Electrical Engineering. This enables students to experiment with different paradigms of knowledge by extending their studies to include a broad variety of courses inspired by Aalto University's disciplinary scope. The university encourages cross-pollination of disciplines and provides students with opportunities to take advantage of the wider university framework.

Apply to ViCCA.
