Multi-disciplinarity, contamination of languages, audience participation, international collaborations: eight new exhibitions open this autumn at MAXXI.
The museum proposal starts from the video installations of Angelica Mesiti and Malik Njemi in The Immigrant Songs (October 2–19) revealing the contribution of immigrants into our society using their musical and poetic voices, their claims of beauty and freedom.
This exhibit is a prelude to Open Museum Open City (October 24–November 30), the revolutionary project curated by Hou Hanru. It will empty the museum, fill it with “sound interventions” and transform it into a public forum. Over 40 artists involved, including Justin Bennet, Cevdet Erek, Lara Favaretto, Francesco Fonassi, Bill Fontana, Jean Baptiste Ganne, Ryoji Ikeda, Haroon Mirza, Philippe Rahm and Radio Arte Mobile.
Fashion enters the museum and communicates with contemporary art with Bellissima. L’Italia dell’alta moda 1945–1968, an exhibition curated by Maria Luisa Frisa, Anna Mattirolo and Stefano Tonchi (2 December 2014–3 May 2015). A special project dedicated to the glamour and charm of an outstanding season for Italian culture and creativity, told by The Fontana Sisters and Schubert, Germana Marucelli and Mila Schön, Balestra, Sarli and Simonetta, Capucci and Gattinoni, Valentino and Galitzine.
Unedited History. Iran 1960–2014 (11 December 2014–29 March 2015), curated by Catherine David, Odile Burluraux, Morad Montazami, Narmine Sadeg and Vali Mahlouji, is a project in collaboration with the Musée d’Art moderne de la Ville de Paris: over 20 artists and 200 works, some of them are presented outside of Iran for the first time, tell the story of the country through its artistic expressions from 1960 to the ’80s.
Dedicated to Huang Yong Ping, Bȃton–Serpent (19 December 2014–April 2015),curated by Hou Hanru, will surprise visitors with a gigantic aluminium snake and other works, a critical reflection the relationship between the contemporary conflicts throughout the world.
From the collection of the NMCA, Korean National Museum of Contemporary Art, the project dedicated to video art in Korea, The Future is Now! (19 December 2014–15 March 2015): 80 works and 40 artists, starting with Nam June Paik, whose phrase “People talk about the future being tomorrow, but the future is now!” inspired the title of the show.
The architectures of war are in the centre of Architecture in Uniform – Designing and Building for the Second World War, curated by Jean Louis Cohen(19 December 2014–3 May 2015), in collaboration with the CCA of Montreal and Cité de l’Architecture of Paris. The story of some of the most interesting projects from the period after the Second World War through film clips, original documents, historical journals, original photographs and models.
In addition, Aliens’ Cave (1–12 October) is a project dedicated to illustrations with works by Lorenzo Terranera, Fabio Magnasciutti and Alessandro Ferraro, a figurative story—imaginative, ironic and poetic—of the museum.
