The John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design, University of Toronto, invites applications for a for a full-time tenure stream position in the area of Visual Arts with an emphasis on artists working across media. This appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor and will be effective July 1, 2020 or shortly thereafter.
Candidates must have a demonstrated record of excellence in research and be engaged in research of an international caliber. We are seeking artists with a strong research agenda and international exposure (e.g. exhibitions, festivals, residencies, publications, commissions, etc.). Demonstrated excellence in teaching is required in contemporary studio and/or media-based practices. Candidates should also have demonstrated accomplishments in critical writing and/or curation. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and strengthen our existing strengths. Candidates must be able to engage in interdisciplinary contributions that take advantage of the visual studies programs position within the multi-program Daniels Faculty and the larger arena of the University. An MFA, MVS or equivalent Master’s degree is required. A PhD in Art, Visual Culture, or a related area is preferred.
Candidates’ record of excellence in research, must be evident through exhibitions, screenings, publications, presentations, and other forms of peer recognition for creative work. Excellence in research will be demonstrated by the submitted research statement; representation in significant international exhibitions, installations, residencies, commissions, or festivals; publications in recognized field-relevant journals (or leading publications in the field) or forthcoming high impact publications or research in progress that targets such publication venues; emerging participation in research projects and networks operating at high, international standards; presentations at significant conferences; strong endorsements by referees of international stature; and other honours and awards.
Candidates must have a strong demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence, and to contributing to the enrichment of undergraduate and graduate programs at the Daniels Faculty. These programs would include the Bachelor of Arts, Visual Studies the Master’s of Visual Studies, and in the new PhD in Architecture, Landscape, and Design Studies. Excellence in teaching will be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, a teaching statement, strong teaching evaluations, and a teaching dossier, including sample syllabi, submitted as part of the application, and strong letters of reference.
The position will include opportunities for the candidate to collaborate with UofT colleagues across the Daniels Faculty. University of Toronto faculty have access to the Canadian Research Councils, which offer grants and research funding opportunities that are unique within North America.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Set within a preeminent research university and located at the center of one of North America’s most cosmopolitan cities, the Daniels Faculty uniquely combines the disciplines of architecture, landscape architecture, art/visual studies, forestry and urban design in undergraduate, professional and advanced graduate programs. The Daniels Faculty explores the intersections between nature, technology, architecture, and various built and natural geographies in a way that situates design, art, and foresters to meet its contemporary challenges. Following a decade-long transformation of the school’s faculty and professional programs, and a recent, major increase in its endowment, the Faculty is expanding its undergraduate and graduate programs. To accommodate both growth in its curricular offerings and an increase in its research and outreach programs, an awarding winning new building complex for the Faculty was recently completed on Toronto’s historic One Spadina Crescent.
