Cinema
The Master in Cinema is an advanced training in contemporary cinema, allowing students to develop their creative and technical skills based in individual projects. Students will be able to choose a specific focus of work (whether in “classic” cinema, in an installation project or in any other form of research). The student will be challenged while being immersed in contemporary artistic thought, challenged to understand different forms of moving images and how cinema can enable reflection and awareness on our constant evolving world. The SoA professors in collaboration with visiting artists and filmmakers will coordinate the student’s project, as well as provide the educational platform for the development of technical and artistic skills.

New Media Art
The Master in Sound and Image—New Media Art track promotes creative innovation across various artistic practices.  The program is structured around the conception, production and presentation of cutting-edge projects that convey new forms of expression. The students will develop their projects according to their personal perspective: whether experimental, artistic  or market-oriented. This challenge will be met and overcome with thorough discussion between professor and student, as well as tutorial guidance by visiting artists. The research will be led through the development of projects, further expanded by theoretical and artistic reflection.

Phd in Science, Technology and Arts
The PhD in Science, Technology and Arts was established with the goal of developing a study program where artists, scientists and researchers from different backgrounds could develop a multidisciplinary research in the realm of artistic practices. This program proposes a curriculum that explores subjects related to the conceptual, creative and technological aspects of the artistic process, as well as its relationship with the fundamental humanities and social sciences. In addition to the available courses, the PhD researchers may freely attend to any course offered at the SoA, acquiring practical and technical skills important for their doctoral research.

This PhD program is intended for artistic creators, technology developers and scientists that wish to develop a practical research that interweaves artistic and technological reasoning.  Research projects can take advantage of the School of Arts’ facilities, equipment and laboratorial infrastructure (computers, audiovisual gear, studios, fabrication workshops).

Funding and grants
As a PhD student you can apply for an individual PhD Studentship from FCT. Additionally, the School of Arts has three distinct research centers: CITAR (Research Center for Science and Technology of the Arts—evaluated as excellent by the FCT in 2019), CCD (Digital Creativity Center) and CCR (Conservation and Restoration Center), with ongoing projects and research grant opportunities.

School of Arts at Catholic University of Portugal
The School of Arts (SoA) offers an intense cultural program, with artists in residence (in 2020 Ben Russel and Vasco Araújo; former residents include Nuno da Luz, Ana Vaz, Jonathan Uliel Saldanha, Salomé Lamas and Yohei Yamakado), a cycle of conferences with special guests (artists, filmmakers, scholars), and a periodic calendar of exhibitions at the School’s exhibition space (since 2018, the School presented exhibitions by Francisco Tropa, João Paulo Serafim, Salomé Lamas, Mariana Caló & Francisco Queimadela, Nuno da Luz, Julião Sarmento, Jonathan Saldanha and Guido Guidi). Also, its Research Center (CITAR – Research Center for the Science and Technology of the Arts) has a plan of activities closely related to the School and it is funded by ongoing projects and by the government institution Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).

The SoA is currently accepting applications for its Master and PhD programs, as well as accepting international applications for its Bachelor programs. Portuguese-speakers can also visit the full range of programs the SoA offers.
