Sharjah Art Foundation (SAF) has announced the 2014 Production Programme open call offering grants for artists working in a range of media including sculpture, installation, time-based media, artist’s books, and performance. Up to a total of 200,000 USD is available in this application cycle. Over the past decade, SAF Production Programme grants have resulted in a range of major commissions including works by Bani Abidi and CAMP, which premiered at dOCUMENTA (13), Kassel. The 2012 recipients of the SAF Production Programme grants were artists Sean Gullette, Mario Rizzi, and Lindsay Seers. Since the programme launched in 2008, over 500 submissions have been received, 230 applications considered, and 28 projects selected for production.

The submission deadline for the current grant cycle is January 31, 2014 and selections will be announced in March 2014. Further details on the Production Programme and application forms are available at www.sharjahart.org

About the Production Programme
The Sharjah Art Foundation Production Programme broadens the possibilities for the production of art in the MENASA region through a commitment to support innovation and excellence in artistic practice by encouraging risk and experimentation. This commitment places artists at the core of the Foundation’s mission by offering grants and professional support for the realisation of projects selected from an open call for proposals.

Sharjah Art Foundation’s exhibitions and events
Sharjah Art Foundation offers an extensive programme of free public exhibitions, film screenings, music, and performances. Current and upcoming exhibitions in the SAF Art Spaces include:

Vantage Point Sharjah (through December 7, 2013), presents photographs by local artists showing varied approaches to the landscape and life of Sharjah.

Chaos into Clarity: Re-Possessing a Funktioning Utopia (October 26, 2013–January 26, 2014) includes works by three artists of the African Diaspora: American textile artist Xenobia Bailey, Moroccan-born photographer and designer Hassan Hajjaj, and British Trinidadian filmmaker and sculptor Zak Ové.This exhibition is curated by Shannon Ayers Holden and was developed as part of Campus Art Dubai 1.0, January to June 2013. Campus Art Dubai is held in partnership with Dubai Culture & Arts Authority.

I Look To You And I See Nothing (November 16, 2013–February 16, 2014) features works by artists including Lawrence Weiner, Terence Koh, Sophie Calle, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Shezad Dawood, Ryoji Ikeda, Anish Kapoor, and Guiseppe Penone and presents immersive sound environments, light installations, and contemplative spaces that explore the boundaries of the viewer’s perception. Curated by Olivier Varenne and Nicole Durling, this exhibition was co-organised by the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA), Tasmania, Australia, and Sharjah Art Foundation.

Ilya and Emilia Kabakov: A Collective Memory (November 23, 2013–February 23, 2014) explores a selection of work by Russian-born American artists Ilya and Emilia Kabakov. While often rooted in the Soviet social and cultural context in which they lived, their work attains a universal significance that contemplates failed utopias around the world.
