A coproduction between the Ruhrtriennale and the Forsythe Company in cooperation with Museum Folkwang, Essen
William Forsythe to guest at Museum Folkwang. The Ruhrtriennale and Museum Folkwang are together presenting the exhibition Nowhere and Everywhere –William Forsythe from 24 August to 8 September 2013.
The successful cooperation begun in 2012 between the Ruhrtriennale and Museum Folkwang continues this year with an exhibition project by the world-famous choreographer and artist William Forsythe. The realization of the spatial installation Nowhere and Everywhere at the Same Time No. 2 (2013), which he created especially for the Ruhrtriennale, opens a totally new chapter in the development of his choreographic work. William Forsythe makes use of the “Große Halle,” the great hall at Museum Folkwang, in its entirety. He has created a choreography for 400 swinging pendulums and the observer. Set in motion, the pendulums create spatial contrasts and centrifugal forces that change in intensity, presenting the observer with a constantly changing labyrinth of enormous complexity. He works with elements of performance, calling on the observer to move and adopt an active role in the exhibition space.
In addition to Nowhere and Everywhere at the Same Time No. 2, Museum Folkwang is showing the video work City of Abstracts (2000). In this interactive work visitors are drawn into a maelstrom of swirling shapes, in which they unexpectedly play a part.
In Museum Folkwang William Forsythe is presenting a selection of his Lectures from Improvisation Technologies (2011), a collection of a total of 60 film studies containing the most important principles of his movement vocabulary and his art of improvisation; the film Solo (1997), a rare chance to see Forsythe himself dancing, will also be shown in the exhibition.
Ruhrtriennale is sponsored by the Ministry for Family, Children, Youth, Culture, and Sport of North Rhine Westphalia as well as the European Union: European Fund for Regional Development. Associates and public sector funders: Land Nordrhein-Westfalen and Regionalverband Ruhr. The Forsythe Company is supported by the city of Dresden and the Free State of Saxony and the city of Frankfurt and the State of Hesse. It is Company-in-Residence in HELLERAU – European Centre for the Arts in Dresden and the Bockenheimer Depot in Frankfurt. With special thanks to the ALTANA Cultural Foundation for the support of the Forsythe Company.
