The Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main dates back to 1817 and is Germany’s leading art academy. It offers degrees in Fine Arts, Architecture, and Curatorial Studies, is led by an international team of acclaimed teaching staff, and attracts a student body of which 60% are from abroad. Portikus, an exhibition space and integral part of the Städelschule, has contributed to the School’s local and international reputation since it was established in 1987. It has developed into a leading centre for contemporary art in Germany and beyond, exhibiting artists from all over the world.

The Städelschule is seeking a charismatic and communicative director who has successfully led an art institution in the past, or who has otherwise shown distinctive leadership in the field of contemporary art. The ideal candidate has an in-depth knowledge of contemporary art, an established position within the international art circuit, broad experience in the curatorial field as well as a keen interest in higher education. An affinity with architecture will be an advantage. The ideal candidate is a confident, open art world professional who has a long-term vision for both Städelschule and Portikus, and the necessary social and managerial skills to lead a team of professors and staff. Essential prerequisites are proven track records in acquiring both public and private funding and excellent commands of both German and English. The Director is expected to live in Frankfurt. The appointment is scheduled for April 1, 2014.

The requirements for employment listed in § 62 Hessen University law apply. The position is initially limited to three years. The designated salary for the position is based on “W L2″ of the German university salary scale. The Städelschule is an equal opportunity employer. Applications of women are strongly encouraged. Individuals with disabilities will be given preference in case of equal qualifications.

Candidates are invited to submit their applications accompanied by the usual documents no later than September 7, 2013 to
