Fanoon Teaching Artist Fellowship 2020–21

The Fanoon Teaching Artist Fellowship at Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar is a 9-month printmaking publishing and teaching residency for emerging to mid-career teaching artists. During the academic year, fellows will design and co-teach a two-semester Master Class in the Painting + Printmaking Department, which introduces undergraduate students to critical topics and cross/multi-disciplinary approaches within the expanded field of contemporary print media. Residents will be given a studio space and the opportunity to further develop their art practice, and work with faculty members, students, and visiting artists, to create a community of artists engaged in scholarly activity and research.

The Fanoon Teaching Artist Fellowship will result in the production of a new limited editioned art project, as part of the Fanoon print Publishing Program/Master Class. Teaching artists fellows will  collaborate with the students and department staff to engage in a project which explores print media’s expanded role within contemporary art practice.

Fellowship recipients will receive:
-A nine-month appointment as a Fanoon Teaching Artist Fellowship
-Stipend (60,000 USD)
-Art materials budget (5,000 USD per semester)
-Free off-campus furnished housing
-Access to a private studio and university facilities
-Monthly local transportation allowance 
-Round-trip economy class airfare from the home destination, at the beginning and end of the fellowship
-Possibility for a solo exhibition in Doha, Qatar in Spring 2021

Required qualifications
-MFA/Ph.D. in Studio Art, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
-2-5 years of university-level teaching experience or 5-7 years of professional experience
-Must possess a well-developed scholarly portfolio in the area of specialization, which is supported by an exhibition record that is national and/or international in scope
-Strong collaboration skills, and demonstrate enthusiasm toward teaching and interacting within a multicultural environment
-Conversant with contemporary art issues, critical theory, and contemporary studio practice

Preferred qualifications
-Creative practices that are conversant with topics and issues related to the MENA region and its expanded diaspora communities
-Solid experience in contemporary art publishing practices 

Position responsibilities
-Residents must develop and co-teach a two semester-long Master Class in the Painting + Printmaking department during the 2020-21 academic year (more information on proposal template). The course will result in the production of an editioned project, as part of the Fanoon print publishing program
-Maintain an active studio practice, which culminates in an exhibition in Doha, Qatar in Spring 2021
-Become an active member of the university/Doha art community. Fellows will be asked to participate in open studio events throughout the residency, and present a public lecture about their work
