Internationally recognised as one of the most important Italian artists of his generation, in 2013 Francesco Vezzoli will feature in three solo shows in international museums.

The series begins in Rome with MAXXI hosting the exhibition Galleria Vezzoli, the first Italian retrospective devoted to the artist. Ninety works presenting Francesco Vezzoli from the earliest works, the embroideries from 1995, through to the most recent videos, self-portraits and sculptures. The title of the exhibition is inspired with levity and irony, by the great galleries of Rome, and evokes the sumptuous atmosphere of the museums of the past.

MAXXI will be completely transformed for the occasion with the futuristic architecture of Zaha Hadid being “draped” with velvets and damask wallpapers against which the artist’s works will be set: the videos and the images which feature the stars of the big screen and TV (from Gloria Swanson to Edith Piaf, from Sonia Braga to Sharon Stone and Helmut Berger), the self-portraits and the sculptures with classical-style features.

Next exhibitions:
The Church of Vezzoli at MoMA PS1, New York
October 2013–March 2014

Cinema Vezzoli at MOCA, Los Angeles
Winter 2013/2014
