The field of moving images crosses the boundaries of film and visual arts to expand and challenge both. Our BA-program teaches you to develop an artistic and critical practice within the field of moving images. The point of departure is always your own work—the school does not dictate your projects.
With a hands-on approach from day one, you will be working with moving images through practical exercises, own productions, intensive courses, discussions, readings and research, and of course collaborating with your piers on their projects as well as working intensely with your own projects.
During your 3 years of study the central focus will be questions regarding your artistic practice: How can you develop your ideas? How can you organize your way of working? Where can your work go? How can you uphold your practice? Your tutors will help you respond to, challenge and elaborate these questions through continuous conversations focused on your work and its contexts. Courses and workshops with guest-teachers working professionally within the field will help you understand your ideas in relation to historical and theoretical questions, as well as open your horizon and understand the work of other people better.
New technology means new ways of working, and we encourage our students to help redefine what image production can be. Through our program you will acquire a creative and critical understanding of moving images, and you will work on finding and developing your own voice through reflection and experimentation. Experiment is everything: The courage to fail and to learn from your mistakes. Your work here will be about seeing, making, doing, dreaming, thinking, showing and developing moving image.
Our students work with, hybridize or problematize different formats such as documentary, fiction, installation and gaming, intended both for cinema screening, for gallery display and other formats.
While traditional film schools train students for a specific role (as director, editor, producer etc.) we focus on the student’s individual artistic practice. We also value exploring collective thinking and practices within a field in rapid development, both in terms of content and technology.
You will have time and resources to continuously try your ideas out in a real-world environment with state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, make, show, test, and have teachers and co-students respond, get involved and help you push further.
During your time at the school you will try all kinds of roles related to production and distribution of moving images, and hopefully invent new roles yourself; roles that fit your projects’ needs, not the needs of the industry. Your own artistic practice remains the central focus on all levels.
Internationally acclaimed professional artists, filmmakers and theoreticians visit the school to teach and give workshops about ideas, methods and processes relating to their work and their contexts.
Nordland School of Arts and Film is located in Kabelvåg in Lofoten/Norway, surrounded by wild nature. This is an important part of the school’s identity. The changes of the region in terms of climate change, oil extraction, ocean use, fisheries and shipping routes, makes us especially interested in new perspectives on the future world order. Post-colonial, feminist and bio-political discourses are central to the education.
Our BA in moving images is tuition-free. All living- and travel-expenses are paid by the students themselves.
Each year we admit approximately 15 students. Teaching is in Scandinavian languages and English.
