Inaugurated in 2001, the Elaine Terner Cooper Education Fund: Conversations with Contemporary Artists series features the most innovative artists working today reflecting on their work and creative process. Ranging from established to emerging artists and working in all mediums, past participants have included Slater Bradley, Tacita Dean, Roni Horn, Anish Kapoor, Christian Marclay, Catherine Opie, Tino Sehgal, and Hugo Boss Prize winners Emily Jacir and Hans-Peter Feldmann.
This spring, the Guggenheim is pleased to welcome the following participating artists in the series:

Reem Fadda, Associate Curator, Middle Eastern Art, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi Project, and recently appointed curator for the National Pavilion of the United Arab Emirates at the Venice Biennale, presents “The Contemporary History of the UAE Art Scene.” In the talk, she discusses discourse in art practice from the mid-1970s to the present as it developed in parallel to the formation of the independent nation-state of the United Arab Emirates. Fadda examines the landscape of the UAE’s vanguard artists and the institutional framework that laid the ground for three future generations of contemporary artists in the UAE, among whom Mohammed Kazem, featured artist for the National Pavilion of the UAE at the 55th Venice Biennale, is acknowledged as a key member. After the lecture, Kazem joins Fadda to discuss his artistic practice. A lively question and answer session follows and the program concludes with a reception with the artist and curator.

On the occasion of her retrospective, Zarina: Paper Like Skin, on view until April 21, 2013, Zarina Hashmi, who prefers to identify by her first name, discusses her artistic practice in an engaging dialogue with Andreas Huyssen, Villard Professor of German and Comparative Literature, Columbia University. Established as a printmaker, Zarina’s largely abstract aesthetic is rich in associations with her life and themes of displacement and exile, memory and nostalgia. The concept of home—whether personal, geographic, national, spiritual, or familial—resonates throughout her work. Program concludes with a private reception and exhibition viewing.
Danh Vo

Danh Vo, the ninth artist to win the Hugo Boss Prize, speaks about his exhibition The Hugo Boss Prize 2012, on view March 15–May 27, 2013. Emerging from a process of research, chance encounters, and delicate personal negotiations, Vo’s installations illuminate the entwined strands of private experience and collective history that shape our sense of self. Program concludes with a private reception and exhibition viewing.
