Background
Over the past decade, Situations has emerged as one of the most innovative art commissioning and research programmes in Britain. Our work is guided by an ardent belief in the potential for art in the public realm to create unforgettable, unexpected and inspiring experiences, to be the beginning of a conversation that changes the way we think about and interact with the world around us. Situations has challenged conventional assumptions about the time and place of public art from One Day Sculpture, a year-long series of temporary art commissions across five cities in New Zealand (onedaysculpture.org.nz) to Alex Hartley’s Nowhereisland, a nomadic Arctic island and one of the primary public art projects for the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad (nowhereisland.org).

As one of the founder members of the European Network of Public Art Producers (ENPAP), we commission new research and encourage critical reflection to inform and improve methods of commissioning and understanding contemporary art internationally. This drives our commitment to produce talks and events that explore ideas through our projects and those of our regional and international peers, and to showcase this work through a cumulative online resource.

After a successful ten-year partnership with the University of the West of England in Bristol, Situations is embarking on a new phase of its development as an independent arts organisation from 1 November 2012. The Producer is a primary appointment to the new Situations team.

The role
We are seeking a highly experienced, full-time Producer to curate and project manage our public projects. You will help shape the future artistic programme of Situations, devise and deliver specific projects and articulate the ideas and issues that inform contemporary practice in the public realm. You will bring an exceptional capacity to commission and curate art in the public realm, working with artists from early research and concept development through to delivery. You will have the proven ability to respond creatively to the demands of public space, to liaise with non-arts partners and stakeholders, to fundraise and manage budgets, and to collaborate with and manage technical teams, fabricators, graphic designers, and associated contractors and suppliers. You will also be an exceptional communicator with a proven interest in broadening the reach and impact of the work of contemporary artists.
